Overview
Can a legend be content with resting on its laurels? The question inevitably arises when discussing the 2017 Honda VFR800F, a veteran with a polite smile navigating between history and nostalgia. To meet the tightening Euro4 standards, the sport-GT had to undergo a few technical adjustments, almost invisible to the naked eye. A slightly revised exhaust for a more discreet style, a simplified airbox, and the addition of mandatory reflectors. As a result, the machine gains a small extra kilogram, but paradoxically gains one horsepower and a little torque, benefiting from the abolition of a former Japanese restriction. It’s an update so subtle that it becomes transparent, as if Honda wanted to preserve the DNA of this icon at all costs.

However, it’s not what it seems. Beneath this delicate evolution, the VFR800F RC79 retains a heart that has been beating strongly for decades: its mythical V4. With 107 horsepower at 10,250 rpm and 75 Nm of torque, it’s not the most brutal in the segment, but its character is unique. The VTEC system, although sometimes criticized for its transition, has been refined to be more supple, seeking to fill the traditional mid-range dip. Compared to a more powerful Yamaha Tracer 900 or a more nervous Suzuki GSX-S1000F, the Honda V4 focuses on smoothness and regularity. It doesn’t howl, it sings, and that’s the difference.
Where the 2017 VFR800F still impresses is in its equipment and chassis. The "Pivotless" aluminum frame and Pro-Arm single-sided swingarm have been part of its identity since 1990, and they provide stability in curves that is as reassuring as it is embracing of the road. The 43 mm HMAS fork and the 310 mm biting disc brakes do a serious job, even if the absence of radial calipers and an inverted fork is felt compared to the competition. On the other hand, Honda had the good idea to add switchable traction control, a rare piece of equipment at the time on a sport touring machine, and serious assets such as heated grips and automatic turn signal recall.
Ultimately, who is this motorcycle for? The demanding globetrotter seeking a versatile travel companion, capable of swallowing highway miles without complaint and then having fun on a winding national road. With its 22-liter tank, 805 mm seat height, and a weight of 239 kg fully fueled, it’s not the most agile in the city, but it excels on long journeys. Its real flaw? Perhaps this impression that Honda is playing the conservation card, while enthusiasts have been dreaming for years of a refreshed VFR with a 1000 cm3 V4 and 140 horsepower, freed from VTEC. Until this hypothetical renaissance, the 2017 Honda VFR800F remains a machine of bewildering homogeneity, a proof that refinement and consistency can sometimes be worth more than brute power. It’s no longer the most modern, but it has a timeless class that few competitors can match.
