Overview
We know the drill with Honda. When a rider starts to shake the stopwatch, they reserve a place for them in the museum before they’ve even finished collecting trophies. In 2001, as Valentino Rossi, this young Italian just crowned in 500cc, was preparing to crush the discipline for the following decade, the manufacturer released a special series that already smelled of legend. Not a new motorcycle, just a tribute: the CBR 600 F Sport Replica, dressed like the NSR 500 of Tavullia’s hero. Technically identical to the standard FS, but with this vibrant yellow, the large number 46, and the blue stripes of Nastro Azzurro – a livery that, at the time, was worth a supplement of a few hundred francs on the base price.

So, what does this racer’s suit hide? Under the paint, you’ll find the mechanics of a well-known sport touring motorcycle: an inline four-cylinder engine of 599 cc, delivering 110 horsepower at 12,500 rpm and a torque of 65 Nm at 10,500 rpm. This engine is a benchmark in the category, reliable, linear, capable of reaching 250 km/h without forcing. The aluminum twin-spar frame, the suspension with a 43 mm fork and a monoshock, the front double disc brakes – everything here is designed for versatility. With a wet weight of 198 kg and a seat height of 810 mm, this CBR remains accessible, without being soft. It sits between a pure sportbike and a touring machine, a compromise that has been its success.
Compared to its contemporaries, such as the Yamaha YZF-R6 or the Suzuki GSX-R600, the CBR 600 F Sport is often judged less radical, less focused on extreme performance. It offers a little more comfort, a less aggressive ergonomics, a 18-liter fuel tank for long journeys. It's the sportbike for those who want to be able to do a weekend in the mountains without having a sore back the next day. The Replica, with its racing look, simply adds a dose of pride to the use – you ride with Rossi’s colors, even if you’ll never match his lap times.
But this special version raises a real question: what’s the point of a replica without technical modifications? For a collector or a fan, it’s a beautiful object, a tribute to history. For a daily rider, it’s just an FS with a more flashy outfit. The price, around 10,137 euros at the time, was justified by the “limited edition” effect, not by concrete improvements. In 2001, it made sense; today, this CBR Rossi Replica is mostly a memory piece, a nod to the rise of a champion who was going to change the face of MotoGP.
Its audience? Sport touring riders looking for a machine capable of everything, from city riding to winding roads, without sacrificing style. Motivated beginners attracted by a racing look, but drawn to a motorcycle that is easier to live with than a pure race machine. And nostalgics, those who see in this yellow and number 46 a piece of Rossi’s history. The CBR 600 F Sport Replica is not the fastest, nor the most technical of its generation, but it represents a moment, a link between the road and the circuit, between everyday life and the legend being written. Honda often has this talent: celebrating history without too much modification to the mechanics. Here, they just put a champion’s cap on an effective sport touring motorcycle – and that was enough to make people dream.
