Overview
When Suzuki unveiled this generation of the GSX-R 600, purists winced. Too tame, too smooth, not aggressive enough. The bodywork had lost that sharp edge that had been the Gex's signature for years. So to wake the beast, Hamamatsu played the Yoshimura card. Deep black, blood red, the Yosh logo displayed unapologetically on the fairings. Forget the same old sanitized blue-and-white — this plunges you into the world of race paddocks, where mechanics have blackened hands and stopwatches are religion.

This 2012 limited edition goes well beyond a simple paint job. The livery, designed by S2 Concept, dresses the bike from rims to the tip of the fairing. A perimeter red stripe on the wheels, matching paddock stand bobbins, a redesigned license plate holder. Every detail signals that this GSX-R wants to play in the league of custom shop builds. But the centerpiece remains the Yoshimura R-11 silencer, a stainless steel exhaust capped with a carbon end cap that unleashes the voice of the inline four. Road homologation still muzzles the full soundtrack, no question, but the tone gains real character over the stock system. And the weight savings, even modest, benefit a machine that already tipped the scales at a very contained 187 kg wet.
On the mechanical side, we find the proven 599 cc inline four-cylinder engine. 126 horsepower at 13,500 rpm, 69.6 Nm of torque at 11,500 rpm. You have to chase the power in the upper rev range — that's the law of the land on a 600 supersport. The engine remains a model of precision and responsiveness once past 8,000 rpm, where the four-cylinder truly comes alive. Against a sharper Yamaha R6 or a more versatile Honda CBR 600 RR, the Gex plays the balance card. A rigorous aluminum twin-spar frame, a 41 mm inverted fork, 310 mm front discs clamped by four-piston radial calipers. The braking, further enhanced here by Brembo monoblock calipers, inspires immediate confidence.
At €11,499, this Yoshimura edition commanded a notable premium over the standard GSX-R 600. The price tag is justified by the exhaust-livery-accessories package, but let's be honest: this remains a cosmetic and acoustic special edition, not a genuine performance evolution. Sportbike enthusiasts who hit the track on weekends will find an appealing base to customize further. Urban riders or beginners, with that seat perched at 810 mm and an engine character that doesn't forgive sloppy inputs, would be better off looking elsewhere.
Still, this Yoshimura has that little extra soul that the stock GSX-R 600 was sorely missing. It recalls the special editions from the American market, the ones French fans had been eyeing enviously for years. Suzuki deserves credit for finally bringing this recipe to Europe, even if the result is more of a beautiful object than a full-blown war machine. To turn this Gex into a true track weapon, you'll still need to open the wallet. But at least the starting point has serious presence.
