Overview

Motorcycle: Harley-Davidson XL 883 L Superlow (2016)

Harley-Davidson XL 883 L Superlow

Can a Harley-Davidson truly fade into the background to become just another motorcycle? That’s the bold gamble of the 2016 XL 883 L Superlow, a machine attempting to marry Milwaukee’s DNA with the reflexes of a European roadster. With a seat just 70.5 cm from the tarmac, it clearly targets riders of smaller stature or those who fear bulk, promising unprecedented accessibility. Yet, with 258 kg when fully fueled, it doesn’t pull any punches on paper. The idea is simple: offer the iconic look and sound of a 45° V-twin, but in a less intimidating package, almost like a gateway to the Harley world. For many, searching for a used Harley-Davidson XL 883 L Superlow will be the way to access this symbol without committing to a larger model.

On paper, the technical specifications won’t excite track riders. Its 52 horsepower and 70.6 Nm of torque delivered at low RPM are modest values, barely sufficient to reach 160 km/h in a straight line. The competition, notably Japanese, crushes these performances for a often lower price. But here, you don’t buy numbers. You buy that unique sensation of low-end thrust, that characteristic rumble, and that timeless image. Belt drive and a double cradle frame are hallmarks of the house, guarantees of authenticity for the purist. The five-speed gearbox, somewhat archaic, is part of the ritual.

Where the Superlow truly wants to innovate is in its handling. The front end, revised with a 120 tire, a 29-degree rake, and adjustable suspension in 2016, aims for improved maneuverability. The controls are repositioned for a more conventional ergonomics, and the “Foundation” braking system with standard ABS provides a welcome safety net, even if the effectiveness remains far from sporty standards. The idea is to approach a roadster feel, to make riding more intuitive and less physical. For a novice or urban rider, this is a significant argument compared to a classic Sportster.

But this pursuit of accessibility comes at a cost, literally and figuratively. The new price hovered around €9,900, a premium positioning for limited road performance. Above all, the “superlow” compromise is paid for in terms of comfort. Suspension travel (108 mm at the front, 54 mm at the rear) is very short, sacrificed on the altar of minimal seat height. As a result, even the slightest imperfection in the road surface is directly transmitted to the rider, turning long straightaways into a trial for the vertebrae. This is the price of this low-slung posture.

So, who is it for? Certainly not the touring rider seeking to devour miles, nor the sportsman hungry for thrills. The Superlow is an image and emotion motorcycle, perfect for the urban rider or beginner who wants to embody the American dream without the complexity of a large custom. It is a style machine, where the engine's character and the brand's aura largely compensate for the dynamic shortcomings. On the used market, it becomes a more reasonable proposition, a ticket of entry into legend. But you have to accept it as it is: a Harley that has trimmed its myths a little to make it more affordable, without ever denying its vibrant soul and timeless look.
