Overview

Can a Harley-Davidson really be discreet? In 2012, the Motor Company took a gamble with the XL 883 L Superlow, a machine that seems to want to whisper where its sisters are used to roaring. At the time, the idea was clear: to seduce an audience not necessarily dreaming of flashy chrome and deafening noise, but still wanting that logo on the tank. This version, with its tamed roadster look, is an uninhibited proposition, almost a gentle gateway to the myth. And on the used market today, it represents a particularly interesting ticket of access for a used Harley-Davidson XL 883 L Superlow, especially if one is primarily looking for style without the constraints of overly archaic mechanics.

Harley-Davidson XL 883 L Superlow

The snag, or rather where it caresses, is in its physical approach. With a seat 69.5 cm from the tarmac, the Superlow doesn't lie about its name. This gesture, combined with a better-positioned handlebar and a lowered center of gravity, makes it immediately familiar to riders coming from Japanese or European roadsters. The bike, despite its 260 kg when fully fueled, proves surprisingly maneuverable at low speed, defying the clumsy image of classic Sportsters. The chassis and Michelin Scorcher tires adhere to this philosophy, offering a more direct and natural steering feel. It’s a Harley that, for once, seems to think about tight roundabouts and sloping parking lots, a real surprise.

But this accessibility comes at a cost, and it's paid in comfort. The suspensions, with their ridiculous 108 mm of travel at the front and 54 mm at the rear, are purely cosmetic. Their role is to keep the bike low, end of story. On the slightest road imperfection, the rider feels it in their vertebrae. This is the radical compromise of this version. The engine, for its part, remains the undisputed Evolution 883, a V-twin that delivers 54 horsepower and a torque of 70.6 Nm at low revs. Don't expect miracles, the maximum speed is around 160 km/h and the acceleration is placid, but it has that deep voice and characteristic pulsation that is part of the deal. It’s about traveling within yourself, not pure performance.

So, who is the rider of this Superlow? Clearly, the beginner seduced by the custom aesthetics but intimidated by the sizes, or the urban traveler wanting an iconic style for their daily commutes without the disadvantages of a cowboy position. It’s also an option for women, the seat height finally being truly adapted. Faced with a Honda Shadow or a Yamaha V-Star 650, it plays the card of marked identity and social status, but concedes on the smoothness of the ride. At nearly 8700 euros new, it was a bold gamble. Today, on the used market, it finds its true place: that of a Harley-Davidson with a softened character, ideal for tasting the legend without hurting your back or your wallet, provided you accept its limitations with philosophy.
