Overview
Is this still a Harley when it starts flirting with European roadster codes? The question inevitably arises with this 2015 XL 883 L Superlow, a machine that seems to have been designed to seduce those whom Milwaukee purism drives away. With a seat height of only 695 mm and an advertised weight of 255 kg fully fueled, the objective is clear: to make the brand accessible, almost familiar. We are talking about an entry-level motorcycle, a first step into the Harley world without the usual culture shock. For around €9,500 at the time, it positioned itself as a characterful alternative to Japanese mid-displacement roadsters.

The engine is the famous 883 cc V-twin, developing 52 horsepower and 70 Nm of torque. These figures do not shake the chronometers, but that is precisely the essence of the thing. Power is low and torque arrives very early, at 3750 rpm, for a smooth and sonorous propulsion that flatters the senses rather than brute performance. Top speed is around 160 km/h, a limit that says a lot about its vocation: it is made to ride with style, not to race. Compared to a classic Sportster, the Superlow plays the card of maneuverability with a 120 front tire, a rake of 29° and repositioned controls for a less demanding ergonomics. It's a Harley that wants to handle like a normal motorcycle.
The braking system, called "Foundation" on this version, marks a clear improvement with a 300 mm front disc, standard ABS and a modernized electrical system including keyless start. These are concessions to pragmatism, adjustments for the European market that values safety and everyday use. But the compromise lies elsewhere, in the suspensions. With only 108 mm of travel at the front and 54 mm at the rear, comfort is sacrificed to achieve this low seat height. The motorcycle hits, it transmits the imperfections of the road, a defect that purists will accept in the name of looks and character, but which may deter a novice.
Finally, this Harley-Davidson XL 883 L Superlow finds its place as a transitional machine. It targets the beginner attracted by the Harley image but intimidated by the posture, or the traveler looking for a roadster with a strong identity. On the used market today, it represents an economical entry point into the Sportster family. It does not rival the liveliness of a Yamaha MT-07 or the versatility of a BMW R nineT, but it offers something they do not: that typical V-twin 45° rumble, that physical presence and that iconic status. It is a motorcycle that is chosen with the heart, accepting its technical limitations as an integral part of its outdated charm.
