Overview
Can a Harley-Davidson Sportster still surprise, or is it condemned to play the same riffs for decades? The 2019 XL 1200 X Forty-Eight Special attempts an answer, with a blend of boldness and tradition that smells of gasoline and chrome. Beneath its urban bad boy appearance, it hides a simple heart: the faithful 1202 cc Evolution twin, delivering 67 horsepower at 6000 rpm and a torque of 96 Nm from 3500 rpm. These figures won't shake a modern Japanese block, but here, power is measured differently. It is in the sensation, in this continuous low rumble that vibrates under the thighs, that the engine finds its true expression.

Harley played on the details to distinguish this Special version. The "Peanut" tank remains minuscule, with just 7.9 liters, an assumed provocation that limits journeys but amplifies the style. The Tallboy black handlebar modifies the riding position, slightly higher and more relaxed, without sacrificing aggressive attitude. On the steel double cradle frame, some artifices have been removed – belt guard recesses, muffler cover – to accentuate the austerity. At 256 kg fully fueled, it is not lightweight, but its 705 mm seat height makes mounting accessible even for a rider of average height.
The mechanics remain classic, even archaic for some. The 49 mm telescopic fork and lateral shock absorbers offer modest travel, suitable for smooth asphalt but not tolerant on deformed roads. The dual-disc braking system, with a two-piston caliper at the front, is sufficient for city speeds, but lacks bite if you push the machine towards its theoretical 170 km/h. The belt transmission and five-speed gearbox are solid, but their operation requires a certain amount of getting used to, far from the precision of a European sportbike.
Compared to a Triumph Street Twin or an Indian Scout, the Forty-Eight Special is clearly positioned as an object of emotion rather than performance. Its price of 12590 euros is a significant argument, identical to the standard version, which makes the choice purely aesthetic. It targets the urban rider who seeks a presence, a raw character, without worrying about long journeys or speed records. It is a motorcycle for those who prefer feeling to numbers, attitude to agility.
Ultimately, this Sportster is not a revolution. It adjusts its image, refines its look, but keeps intact its rough and charismatic DNA. You adopt it for its temperament, for that unique rumble that shakes the windows, not for its technical prowess. It remains a little rascal, but a rascal who knows exactly why you love it.
