Overview
What if a motorcycle could be a journey back in time, without ever leaving the present? The 2012 Harley-Davidson Sportster Seventy-Two plays precisely this delicate game. It doesn't seek to be an exact replica of a historical model, but rather to capture the essence, the spirit of the age when choppers were born in Californian garages. Its name, Seventy-Two, is a direct nod to the Pacific Coast Highway, that legendary road in Los Angeles that has seen so many custom creations pass by. It is a motorcycle that speaks of culture, not just mechanics.

It immediately stands out in the Sportster range with its bright and almost provocative aesthetic, counter to the bobber and dark custom trends that often blacken custom bikes. Its mini ape-hanger handlebar, placed high, its forward controls, its flat solo seat like a plank, and its peanut-shaped fuel tank of only 7.9 liters are style statements. The bright chrome and Dunlop whitewall tires on spoked rims complete this bold silhouette, light at the front with its 21-inch wheel, and anchored at the rear. It is a machine made to be seen, to display a certain panache on the road or at gatherings.
The mechanics, on the other hand, are an anchor in Harley tradition. The 1202 cm3 Evolution engine, an air-cooled V-Twin whose roots go back a long way, is the master card here. It produces only 75 horsepower, a modest power that doesn't mislead about its intentions. But its torque of 96 Nm, available from 3500 rpm, is the main argument. It offers this characteristic propulsion, this feeling of constant traction that makes riding a Harley a pleasure. Paired with a five-speed gearbox and a belt final drive, it ensures simple and sonorous journeys, without seeking extreme performance. With a wet weight of 253 kg, the Seventy-Two is not a sportbike, but its torque allows it to move its mass with a certain authority.
Ridden, it is aimed at a rider who seeks attitude and sensory experience rather than pure speed. The announced top speed of 170 km/h is indicative of quiet or urban road use. The seat height of 710 mm makes access easy, but the position imposed by the high handlebar and forward controls is typical, requiring a period of adaptation. It is not the motorcycle for the absolute beginner, but rather for someone who is already initiated and wants to enter the world of customs with a model full of symbols. At a price of around 11,000 euros at its launch, it positioned itself as a stylish option in the Sportster family.
In short, the Seventy-Two is an interesting creation. It succeeds in injecting a dose of vintage "chopper" energy into a modern Sportster base, without becoming a museum piece. Its limitations are clear: a tiny fuel tank for long journeys, modest power, and a very specialized ergonomics. But its strengths are obvious: a radiant style, a charismatic engine that speaks to the rider through its torque, and this ability to carry with it a fragment of American motorcycle culture. For those who accept its compromises, it offers a unique riding experience, focused on feeling and image, much more than on the dashboard figures.
