Overview
Choosing an American custom in 2015 is a deliberate bet on style rather than brute performance. Harley-Davidson doesn't seek to convince those who dream of dozens of horsepower and onboard electronics. With the Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom, the Milwaukee brand offers something else: a posture, a culture, a way of occupying the road that belongs to it alone. The Evo twin with 1201 cc delivers 75 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and 96 Nm of torque at 3,750 rpm, figures that would make a track rider smile, but which give a frank and unambiguous character to those who know how to appreciate them.

The XL 1200 CA version, adapted for 2015, refines the concept without revolutionizing it. The flat drag-bar style handlebar repositions the torso forward, the polished five-spoke rims recall the aesthetics of the beautiful American cars of the sixties, and the controls moved closer to the rider give a more active riding position than on traditional customs with forward-mounted footpegs. The Amber Whiskey finish on a Vivid Black background replaces the Candy Orange of the previous year, with that slightly wild grain that muscle car enthusiasts will recognize. The engine itself receives a dark trim that accentuates the raw, almost industrial, feel of the whole. This is not a machine that whispers; it is a machine that growls.
What we retain from the Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom test is mainly the coherence of the whole. A seat height of 676 mm makes it accessible to a wide range of body types, and the 259 kg when fully fueled is really only felt when stopped or maneuvering at low speeds. In motion, the final belt drive absorbs jolts, the six-speed gearbox offers crisp shifts, and the wide tires in 130/90 at the front and 150/80 at the rear stick to the philosophy of the machine. The announced top speed of 175 km/h sets the ambitions: you are not there to overtake on the highway at full throttle, but to ride at a steady pace and enjoy the V-twin beating beneath your thighs.
Braking has made a leap since the 2014 model year. Standard ABS, a larger front disc, reworked calipers and a master cylinder: this deserved to be mentioned, as it was clearly the Achilles' heel of the previous generation. On a used Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom from years prior to 2014, this point deserves verification. Faced with a Kawasaki Vulcan S or a Honda CMX500, Milwaukee plays in a different price category, displayed at 12,090 euros, but it also offers a universe and a community that its Japanese rivals cannot imitate. The Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom forum is full of user experiences over ten years of production, proof that this motorcycle generates rare loyalty.
This Sportster is aimed at a rider who has already spent a few years in the saddle, sensitive to American aesthetics and not in a hurry to compete with sportbikes. It is not a machine for beginners, despite its reasonable seat height: the size and character of the twin require a certain ease. But for those seeking a custom with cachet, built with care, and capable of kilometers without undue fatigue thanks to contained consumption of 4.9 liters per 100, the Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom remains a solid reference in its segment. Not perfect, not revolutionary, but sincere.
