Overview
Do you dream of a Ducati, but fear scorching your wings on a 999 that’s too radical? In 2006, the Borgo Panigale manufacturer had precisely concocted a machine for lovers of the V2 who refuse psychiatric care: the Supersport 1000 DS. It’s not a purebred sportbike, it’s an Italian sport touring machine, a compromise that smells of gasoline and strong coffee.

Under its 16-liter fuel tank beats a large 90° V-twin cylinder engine, air-cooled and equipped with two valves per cylinder. With 86 horsepower at 7750 rpm and 93 Nm of torque available from 5750 rpm, we are far from the grand madness of Japanese superbikes. The philosophy is entirely different: here, the engine pulls like a beast from the mid-range, with a surge of progressive torque that pushes your back without ever breaking traction. The deep sound and characteristic hammering of Ducati twins do the rest. It’s an engine that has proven its worth on the Monster 1000 and the Multistrada of the time, reliable and full of character, even if its air cooling can show its limits in summer traffic jams.
The steel trellis frame and the fully adjustable 43 mm Showa inverted fork ensure serious handling. At the rear, the Öhlins shock absorber, also adjustable, and the aluminum swingarm set the tone: this is a motorcycle made to swallow curves. But be warned, the riding position is uncompromising. With a 820 mm seat height and low clip-on handlebars, the body is leaned forward, the wrists and back take the brunt. The wheelbase of 1395 mm and a wet weight of 188 kg do not make it an agile motorcycle in the city. You have to take it firmly, guide it with conviction in the curves. The steering is direct, but a little heavy at low speed. This is the price to pay for remarkable stability once launched.
Faced with a competitor like the Suzuki SV 1000, Ducati plays a contrasting part. The Suzuki is easier, more versatile, and less expensive. The Supersport 1000 DS, on the other hand, demands from its rider, mistreats him a little, but rewards him with raw sensations and a marked personality. At over 10,000 euros at the time, it was an investment for a passionate person looking for authenticity rather than pure performance. It does not target the pure track rider, but rather the sporty touring rider who accepts a few sacrifices for the pleasure of a living mechanical and an honest chassis.
This Ducati doesn’t make concessions. It vibrates, it heats up, it tires. But it also gives chills that few machines at this price offered. It’s a motorcycle with character, tailored for winding roads and riders who like to feel the machine working beneath them. An object of passion, not of reason.
