Overview

Are you looking for an Italian sport-tourer that isn't a sanitized machine, a motorcycle with character and guts, capable of covering the distance without sacrificing pleasure? In 2003, Ducati responded with the ST3. This motorcycle, often affordable on the used Ducati ST 3 market, marks a crucial step in the evolution of the ST range. It follows the ST2, but with a clear ambition: to be more performant, more accomplished, and more mature. Ducati ST 3 forums are still filled today with testimonials from loyal users, proving that this machine has struck a chord.

Ducati ST 3

The heart of the transformation is its engine. Ducati abandons the ST2’s two-valve twin for the three-valve 1000 DS, already known on the Multistrada and Monster 1000. This 992 cc twin gains liquid cooling and a power output of 102 horsepower, a 20 hp increase compared to its predecessor. Torque, at 93 Nm, is slightly lower, but the engine breathes better and offers a more linear progression. It’s no longer the raw and impulsive engine of the SuperSport, it’s a more refined mechanical unit, but one that retains the Ducati soul. It vibrates a little, it growls, and each throttle opening is rewarding. On the road, it gives this sport-tourer wings, even if its flexibility at low rpm doesn’t really encourage urban cruising.

Ducati has also refined the ergonomics and practical aspects, clearly targeting the touring rider eager to travel. Protection is the major project. The new headstock, perhaps less stylish than the ST2’s, is finally effective and protects the rider up to sustained speeds. The dashboard becomes modern and informative, the lighting adapts automatically. There’s even a clever system to adjust the height of the exhaust pipes, depending on whether you prioritize luggage attachment or ground clearance for more sporty use. The seat is more comfortable, but the height of 820 mm and a large turning radius remain points of attention, especially for smaller riders.

On the asphalt, the ST3 reveals its true temperament. It doesn’t have the omnipresent smoothness of a BMW RT of the time, nor the neutrality of a Honda. It has a personality. The trellis frame and Showa and Sachs suspensions, identical in specifications to the ST2, seem better balanced here. The motorcycle carries its weight better, it is more agile and more surefooted in corners. The clutch remains virile, the braking with its two 320 mm front discs is solid. It’s a machine that requires a little commitment, but it rewards it tenfold in sensations and passion.

The Ducati ST 3 therefore positions itself as a sport-tourer for the character enthusiast. It’s not the most versatile or the easiest, but it offers an authentic experience. It suits the touring rider who prefers winding roads to highways, the rider who wants an alternative to machines that are too neutral. Today, on the used market, it represents a safe bet for those looking for a Ducati that can be used daily, without compromising the essence of the brand. It proves that sport touring can be practiced with passion, and not just with pragmatism.
