Overview

What really changes when a motorcycle gains a valve? In 2004, Ducati answers with the ST3, a machine that buries the ST2 without denying its sport touring DNA. Three valves per cylinder, two for intake and one for exhaust, grafted onto the 1000 DS already known on the Multistrada. The real revolution is the arrival of liquid cooling, a first for a Bologna road bike at the time. The result? 102 horsepower at 8750 rpm, a good bit more than the previous model, even if the torque drops by a mere 1 mkg. At a standstill, the silhouette remains faithful, only the nose evolves for better protection, the weak point of previous generations. Ducati also takes care of the practical details: a more complete dashboard, automatic lighting, and above all, a clever height-adjustable exhaust system. Low to mount the luggage cases, high to clear ground clearance when the road becomes winding. At 11,195 euros new, it positioned itself as an Italian and spirited alternative to the well-polished Japanese bikes.

Ducati ST 3

But a Ducati remains a Ducati, and sporting genes do not betray themselves. Despite a thicker seat, the 820 mm height and a rather wide turning radius make it an unaccommodating companion in the city. Add a fairly firm clutch and a twin that doesn't like to stay below 3000 rpm, and you will understand that its kingdom is the national road or the mountain pass. Once launched, the ST3 reveals its character. The engine breathes freely, delivering a frank and exhilarating thrust from the middle of the rev range. It vibrates a bit, certainly, but it's a vibrant vibration, far from the brutality of the SuperSport models of the time. On the road, the trellis frame and Showa and Sachs suspensions, fully adjustable, offer reassuring and agile handling. It doesn’t have the muted refinement of a BMW R 1150 RT, but it brings a passion and an engagement that the German doesn’t offer.

Today, searching for a used Ducati ST3 is a connoisseur's choice. It's a motorcycle with character, which requires a bit of know-how to be tamed, but which repays a hundredfold in sensations. It is aimed at the globetrotter who refuses anonymity, at the one who wants to cover kilometers without giving up the thrill of a vibrant engine. Its 21-liter tank and correct comfort make it a true traveler, provided you accept its small demands. For those who hesitate, a ride on a Ducati ST3 forum is instructive: it often talks about lasting passion, honest reliability once the maintenance is up to date, and that indelible smile after a long day in the saddle. The ST3 is not the most versatile, nor the most gentle, but it has that soul that is lacking in so many machines that are too perfect. A piece of motorcycle heritage, to be enjoyed without moderation.
