Overview

At the dawn of the 2000s, sport-touring was a playground where Italian manufacturers were discreet. The Ducati ST3 of 2007 is Bologna’s response, more accomplished and less rustic than its predecessor, the ST2. It doesn't settle for a cosmetic evolution; under its redesigned fairing, the mechanics have mutated. The mythical 992 cm3 L-twin cylinder switches to three valves per cylinder and gains the valuable liquid cooling. The result? A displayed power of 92 horsepower, more civilized and less voracious, which pulls with a beautiful linearity from medium revs. It’s far from the explosive character of a SuperSport, and that’s all the better for the touring rider who aims for autonomy and comfort over long distances.

Ducati ST 3

The ST3 fully embraces its dual role. On one hand, it pampers the rider with a complete dashboard, automatic lighting, and a better-shaped saddle. The handlebars and even the silencers are adjustable, a practical detail that shows that Ducati wanted to seduce beyond its purists. But don't be fooled: with 182 kg dry weight and a saddle at 825 mm, it asserts its presence. In the city, the turning radius remains generous and the clutch demands a calf muscle. It’s clearly not its forte. It thrives on open roads, where the new fairing offers effective protection and where the Showa and Sachs suspensions, although carried over from the previous model, handle things seriously. The road holding is healthy, predictable, and the braking with double 320 mm front discs inspires confidence.

Compared to a BMW R 1200 RT of the time, heavier and more velvety, the Ducati ST3 plays the card of engagement and character. Its engine vibrates just enough to recall its origins, without being exhausting. It doesn’t seek the absolute versatility of a Multistrada, but offers a very appealing Italian synthesis between sportiness and travel. Today, looking for a used Ducati ST3 can be a clever coup de cœur for an experienced rider who wants a touring bike with temperament, without the excesses or prices of hyperspecialized models. Feedback on Ducati ST 3 forums often confirms this: it’s a machine that ages well, reliable once properly maintained, and that offers that communicative passion typical of the brand. A transitional model, perhaps, but one that has managed to mature without denying its soul.
