Overview
Imagine a machine that doesn't seek to be the fastest on the track, but rather one that makes you feel every kilometer like a page from an old travel journal. Ducati, with the SportClassic GT1000 Touring from 2009, has precisely played that card. It doesn't come from the era of suffocating superbikes, but from a time when character took precedence over raw numbers.

This GT Touring is the civilized version of the SportClassic family, the one that accepts a windscreen and a chrome luggage rack without denying its origins. A few accessories are added for long-distance riding, but the essence remains intact. The heart of the machine, a 992 cm3 air-cooled two-valve V2, exhales 92 horsepower at 8000 rpm and a torque of 91.3 Nm. This engine, derived from the Monster, has a deep voice and a temperament that requires a bit of dialogue. The six-speed gearbox is solid, but the final drive is a little long and the clutch requires a firm hand. It's not a motorcycle for impatient beginners; it demands complicity.
On the road, its trellis frame and moderate geometry offer stability. The suspension, a 43 mm inverted fork and two lateral shock absorbers, correctly filters imperfections without seeking surgical precision. With a wet weight of 209 kg and a seat height of 810 mm, it holds the line well without being intimidating. The 15-liter tank and 120/70 and 180/55 tires allow it to cover the distance, even if the maximum speed is around 220 km/h. It is made for the globetrotter who prefers sensation to performance, for those who want a Ducati with which to leave without rushing.
Compared to its contemporaries such as certain BMW R models or even modern Honda CBs, the GT1000 Touring stands out for its raw mechanical soul. It doesn't have the smooth versatility of a Japanese machine, nor the perfect ergonomics of a German one. But it possesses that retro charisma, that visual presence with its chrome fenders, and that line that tells a story. At 10,800 euros at launch, it was not cheap, but it offered an alternative to classic motorcycles that were too tame.
Ultimately, the Ducati SportClassic GT1000 Touring remains a niche proposition. It is not suitable for the pure track rider, nor for the hurried urban rider. It is for the enthusiast who accepts its small flaws – a slightly rough transmission, classic ergonomics – to savor its unique character. A motorcycle that is not measured by power or weight, but by the emotion it delivers on every back road.
