Overview
When Bologna decides to break with thirty years of tradition in a single model, it makes a statement. The Multistrada has always been a schizophrenic machine by nature, capable of doing everything without ever completely failing. But with the V4, Ducati crosses an additional line: exit the L-twin that defined the brand's sonic identity, exit the desmodromic distribution, exit the trellis frame. Instead, a 90-degree V-four of 1158 cc, 170 horsepower at 10,500 rpm, 124.5 Nm at 8750 rpm. All housed in a monocoque aluminum frame. If you're looking for the opinion of a purist nostalgically reviewing the Ducati Multistrada V4 S, move along. This motorcycle doesn’t play on the register of patrimonial emotion.

This engine, precisely, deserves closer examination. Its 90-degree V architecture isn't new in itself; Honda exploited it on the Crossrunner and Crosstourer, but no one had yet pushed the concept to 170 horsepower in a large-wheel trail bike. The BMW R 1250 GS peaks at 136 hp, the KTM 1290 Super Adventure at 160 hp. The Ducati Multistrada V4 S therefore takes the lead in this peloton on this single criterion. However, 243 kg when fully fueled is the reality of a motorcycle that has gained 8 kg compared to the 1260 DVT S. Ducati trimmed everywhere possible; the V4 block weighs less than the V2 it replaces, but the thermal and electronic bill has increased the cost. The 840 mm seat height won’t simplify life for those of modest stature, even though the preload function introduced on the 2022 model year allows the ride height to be slightly lowered.
What truly distinguishes the S version, beyond the Skyhook Evolution semi-active suspension that has equipped Multistrada S models since 2013, is the dual-architecture radar. A front module developed by Bosch manages an adaptive cruise control system functional between 30 and 160 km/h in four spacing levels. A rear module monitors blind spots and illuminates a diode in the concerned rearview mirror if a vehicle enters the blind zone, with a reinforced alert if the rider engages the turn signal in this context. This BSD system remains an option, which is debatable given the Ducati Multistrada V4 S price of €24,290. By comparison, KTM offers its ACC without the rear system, BMW only includes it on the RT. The MTS V4 S is the only trail bike to combine both sensors, an argument that earned the model the title of Best Motorcycle of 2021 awarded by Robb Report.

The onboard interface follows the same logic of controlled escalation. The 6.5-inch TFT screen displays a tachometer inspired by the Panigale V4, manages navigation via the Sygic app coupled with the phone, and allows navigation through the four riding modes: Sport, Touring, Urban, and Enduro. Each mode adjusts the engine mapping between 115 and 170 horsepower, modulates the thresholds of the DTC traction control, the DWC wheelie control, and the three levels of Cornering ABS. Enduro mode deactivates the rear ABS and cornering correction to regain a more instinctive feel on gravel. With a 19-inch front wheel, 220 mm of ground clearance, and 180 mm of rear travel, the Ducati Multistrada V4 S grand tour version technical specifications remain clearly a dressed-up road bike rather than a true trail-blazing machine.

For whom rides the Ducati Multistrada V4 S, the typical profile is that of a grand tourer who devours the kilometers but refuses to sacrifice pleasure on the altar of comfort. The 22-liter tank allows for reasonable autonomy, the lateral winglets deflect hot engine air away from the legs, the rear cylinder deactivation at a stabilized speed reduces heat production in the city. All of that holds the road. What the competition doesn’t offer at this level of active electronic equipment is precisely what Ducati is selling here at a high price. On the used market, the Ducati Multistrada V4 S represents a coherent opportunity if the services have been followed, because the maintenance intervals have been extended on this V4. A motorcycle that requires a certain financial commitment, but that doesn’t leave anyone indifferent on the road.
