Overview
Do you remember the feeling of igniting a firecracker? That high-pitched hiss, that tension, then that explosion of light and sound. That’s exactly what Kawasaki sought to capture with the “Firecracker” livery of this Z 900 50th Anniversary. We’re talking about a modern roadster that, beneath its celebratory attire, remains fundamentally the stage beast we know. With its 125 horsepower drawn from a 948 cm3 inline four-cylinder engine, it delivers power without complex thought, letting the 99 Nm of torque reveal itself from the middle of the rev range. At 212 kilograms fully fueled, it handles aggression with surprising elegance, far from the raw character of its ancestors.

This special edition is primarily a stylistic exercise, a nod to history without being a replica. The flamboyant red, the matching rims, and the gold accents on the forks and logos are a beautiful tribute, but they don’t transform the mechanics. We find the same steel trellis frame, the same 41 mm adjustable inverted fork, and the powerful front dual 300 mm disc brakes. The electronics are complete with riding modes, traction control, and a connected TFT screen. For 10,599 euros, you’re paying for the exclusivity of the color scheme and the finishes, not a technical evolution.
Compared to a Yamaha MT-09 or a Triumph Street Triple RS, the Z 900 positions itself as a more substantial, more physical alternative. Its engine is less vehement at low RPM than the Triumph’s inline triple, but it unleashes a linear and addictive fury in the upper revs. It’s a machine for those seeking a muscular roadster, with a frank character and reassuring handling. A seat height of 820 mm makes it an accessible motorcycle, although its lively temperament is more suited to the experienced rider than the perfect beginner.
So, is it just a reskin? For the most part, yes. Kawasaki hasn’t touched the recipe. But it must be recognized that the treatment works. This Z 900 in red and gold has presence, it celebrates a heritage with panache without living in the past. It remains, at heart, an incredibly effective and playful roadster, which knows how to disappear in the city then stick you to the tank on a winding road. A beautiful object for a collector that rides, in short, but whose true pleasure lies less in the stickers than in the howl of its four-cylinder engine on throttle opening.
