Overview
Do you feel the subtle scent of Öhlins? It’s the one that escapes most Kawasaki models in SE version. When renewing its Z 900, the Akashi brand hasn’t forgotten to equip it with a better-equipped version. Thus, a beautiful gold color and superior efficiency specifications come into play in the rear suspension with the installation of an Öhlins S46 component.
The fork also steps up a level but remains from Kayaba. For the Z 900 Special Edition, it receives a gold treatment and can be adjusted in all directions (preload, compression, rebound). SE models having a more striking and qualitative look, it is appropriate that the handling is also improved.
Within this same doctrine, the braking system steps up a level, with Brembo calipers. The Italian calipers are of quality, and the braided hoses will be appreciated in intensive use. The installation of a sport brake reservoir suits the underlying temperament of this Z. But the M4.32 are starting to show their age; it would be time for Kawa to install M50 or Stylema.
To conclude its added value, the Z 900 SE adds a USB-C port and a two-tone seat. All of this makes this roadster a vindictive machine, in the right measure, with a little less effrontery than the previous model.
Obviously, the SE benefits from all the improvements of the Z 900 sauce 2025-26. The engine goes Euro5+, gains availability at mid-range, reduces consumption, but loses a touch of power and torque. The electronics progress with the installation of a cruise control, an Up&Down shifter, an IMU to make ABS and traction control active in corners, and a new dashboard. The TFT screen goes from 4.3 inches to 5 inches, accompanied by all-new graphics and turn-by-turn navigation. Below, there are still 4 Riding Modes (Sport / Road / Rain / Rider) to supervise the two levels of power and the 3 of traction control.
Regarding the chassis, we note a stiffened steering column and minor revisions to the frame. The tires are signed Dunlop, with their new Q5A – we don’t know much about them. A small precision, the SE will not be available in a bridable A2 version.
Whether in normal or Special Edition, the Z 900 is refreshed more than it changes. This keeps it in a good place on the French market but the 1000 Hornet could hurt it in the gut.
