Overview
At Ducati, honoring a rider with a special edition is a well-established tradition. Fogarty, Bayliss, Bostrom, Roche: all earned their branded machine, their name engraved on the tank of a Bologna sportbike. Bayliss even scored the double with a 998 S and a 1098 R. When the Italian manufacturer decided to pay tribute to Nicky Hayden in 2010, the choice may have raised eyebrows. The Kentuckian, while a MotoGP champion in 2006, was struggling to shine on the Desmosedici at the time. But a world title isn't easily forgotten. And when it comes to winning over the American market, it's hard to find a better ambassador.

The 848 serves as the foundation for this Hayden Replica, limited to 100 units reserved exclusively for the United States. A clever choice: the 848, with its 90° L-twin displacing 849 cc, produces 134 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 96 Nm of torque at 8,250 rpm. Figures that place it a notch below the 1098 in terms of raw power, but give it a more approachable, more usable character on the road. At 168 kg dry, built around a tubular steel trellis frame and rolling on 120/70-17 front and 180/55-17 rear tires, it remains a serious sportbike capable of reaching 250 km/h. Braking relies on twin 320 mm front discs with radial-mount four-piston calipers, a setup worthy of the Italian twin's performance.
On the aesthetic front, the Hayden Replica plays the American card to the hilt. A large star on a blue background, G.I.-style patches on the fairing's nose, Nicky's handwritten signature on the tank: it borders on unapologetic Stars and Stripes patriotism. The result leaves no one indifferent, and fans of the 996 Bostrom Replica will spot a family resemblance. It's loud, it's proud, and ultimately quite fitting for Hayden's persona — a popular and endearing rider.
On the technical side, this 2010-vintage 848 incorporates the updates planned for the entire range that year: mirrors widened by 30 mm for a finally adequate field of vision, LED lighting for the instrument cluster, and new aluminum tensioners for the timing belts. Nothing revolutionary, but details that matter in everyday use. The 43 mm telescopic hydraulic fork provides 127 mm of travel up front, while the rear monoshock offers 120 mm. A seat height of 830 mm and a 15.5-liter fuel tank round out the profile of a sportbike designed for thrills rather than long-distance touring. The six-speed gearbox and chain final drive remain standard fare for the segment.
Priced at $14,495 stateside — roughly €500 more than a standard 848, which listed at €10,405 in France — this Replica is aimed above all at collectors and Nicky Hayden fans. Its sporting merit remains that of a standard 848, no more, no less. But its rarity and its story make it a standout piece in the Ducati catalog, a sincere tribute to a beloved champion whose record fully deserved a dedicated livery.
