Overview
Is there still room for a pure sportbike, a real one, that isn’t an outrageously expensive 220-horsepower missile or a compromise that’s too sanitized? By launching this R9 900, Yamaha answers with a clear and massive “yes,” injecting a welcome dose of adrenaline into a segment that sorely needed it. With a price tag announced at around €13,999 in France, the question of the price of the Yamaha R9 900 2026 finds a rather appealing answer, especially compared to often more expensive Italian bikes.

At the heart of the matter is this famous CP3 three-cylinder engine, 889 cm³, a motor we know by heart on the MT-09. Yamaha made the bold choice not to force-feed it with power, setting it at 119 horsepower, just a bit more than its roadster alter ego. Some will grumble, hoping for a race beast. In reality, it’s a stroke of strategic genius. With 93 Nm of torque available from 7000 rpm, this engine is a tornado in the mid-range, much more vehement and usable than a high-revving four-cylinder on the open road. It offers the intoxicating character and raspy sound of a triple, without the complexity and cost of Superbike mechanics. The top speed of the Yamaha R9 900 2025, announced at 240 km/h, is more than sufficient for all legal uses and even a little beyond, proving that brute force isn’t the alpha and omega of pleasure.
Where Yamaha really put in the effort is on the chassis. A brand-new Deltabox frame, specifically designed to stiffen the bike in all axes, and a wet weight of only 195 kg. These figures speak for themselves: we’re dealing with a ballerina, not a heavyweight. The comparison with the old Triumph Daytona 675 is inevitable, both in terms of the "lightweight / fiery engine" spirit and the promised agility. The highly adjustable KYB suspension and Brembo Stylema radial brakes are serious track-grade equipment, demonstrating that accessibility isn’t synonymous with compromise. This technical package clearly targets the rider who is looking for an agile and responsive machine for the winding road, with the ability to shine on the track on weekends without being a pro.

Electronics, often a source of headaches on large machines, are here brought back to the essentials without being minimalist. A 6-axis IMU manages traction control, a wheelie control, a launch control and a convenient cruise control. The interface via the MyRide app is modern, but most importantly, everything remains intuitive. We are far from throttle factories that require a 300-page manual. It’s a sportbike that you mount, adjust in two minutes, and ride. End of story.

So, who is this R9 for? It is the perfect weapon for the demanding enthusiast who finds the R7 a little too tame and the RS 660 perhaps a bit too civilized, but for whom a Panigale V2 or an RSV4 remains financially and physically unaffordable. It’s the smart sportbike, the one that prioritizes feel, agility and daily pleasure over the horsepower race. Yamaha isn’t reviving the pure sportbike with an uncontrollable monster, but with a reasonably extreme, raw and accessible machine. Perhaps that’s the real revolution.
