Overview
Thirty years. That's how long it took Ducati to bring its L-twin engine to its ultimate point of perfection, before turning the page. The Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition is not just another motorcycle in the Bologna catalog: it's a mechanical testament, signed in ink with the 333 victories and 17 constructors' titles earned in World Superbike since Marco Lucchinelli opened the counter at Donington Park in 1988 with the 851. When a brand builds a legend around a single engine for three decades, it needs a send-off worthy of it. That's what this machine is.

The Superquadro beating beneath the tricolor fairing has little in common with a production engine. Directly derived from the 1299 Superleggera engine, this 90° twin of 1285 cc produces 209 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, with a torque of 142.2 Nm available at 9,000 rpm. To achieve these figures, Ducati Corse worked in the details: lightweight crankshaft with a larger diameter wrist pin, tungsten balancing weights, titanium connecting rods, titanium exhaust valves, 116 mm diameter pistons with only two segments sliding in steel liners. A bore/stroke ratio of 116 x 60.8 mm and a compression ratio of 13:1 for an engine that accepts no compromise. The technical specifications of the Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition speak for themselves, and they speak loudly.
At 168 kg dry and 190 kg fully fueled, the power-to-weight ratio is simply indecent. The aluminum monocoque frame, developed by Ducati Corse, integrates the airbox and actively participates in this hunt for grams. The fully adjustable Öhlins suspension, 43 mm inverted fork at the front and lateral mono-shock at the rear, are in keeping with the tradition of true road racing machines. Brembo radial-mounted calipers biting 330 mm discs complete the picture. The Akrapovic titanium exhaust, Euro 4 homologated, is the same as those equipping the Panigale R entered in the world championship. At €39,900, we are not talking about a touring motorcycle. We are talking about a registered track tool, capable of reaching 300 km/h, intended for those who know exactly what they want.
The onboard electronics are up to the rest: six-axis inertial measurement unit, cornering ABS, traction control DTC EVO, wheelie control DWC EVO, engine braking control. Three riding modes, Race, Sport and Wet, with total customization for those who want to refine each parameter according to their level and circuit. On this point, the competition — whether it's the BMW S 1000 RR or the Aprilia RSV4 RF — offers comparable electronic arsenals, but none have this emotional density rooted in Superbike history.
Each example bears an individually engraved number in its history. It is not a limited series in the strict sense, but it is a motorcycle rare by nature, intended for a demanding clientele of enthusiasts, collectors or seasoned track riders. Those looking for a used Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition know that they are not getting their hands on a simple sportbike; they are acquiring the final point of a lineage that has redefined Superbike. The arrival of the Panigale V4 marks the entry into a new era for Bologna. But before closing this chapter, Ducati had one last thing to say with this twin. And it said it at 209 horsepower, in tricolor, without asking permission.
