Overview

When Bologna decides to tighten the screw even further, there’s no negotiating. The 1098 had already laid the groundwork for a radical philosophy, a Testastretta twin bolted into a steel trellis frame like a race engine in a track chassis. But two years after its launch, the twin-cylinder architecture called for more. Engineers widened the bore, lengthened the stroke, redesigned the intake ducts, and machined out every area where magnesium could replace aluminum. The result is clearly reflected in the technical specifications of the Ducati 1198: 170 horsepower at 9,750 rpm, 131.4 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm, all housed in a machine that weighs only 168 kilograms dry.

Ducati 1198

This increase in displacement is anything but insignificant. The bore increases to 94 mm for a stroke of 61.2 mm, very square dimensions that favor a crisp revving response and immediate throttle response. The intake valves have grown, the cam profiles have been hardened, and the engine has lost three kilograms thanks to new manufacturing processes for the crankcases. On the 2011 Ducati 1198, Ducati takes another step forward by equipping the standard series with DDA, the data acquisition system, traction control DTC, and a quickshifter. This level of equipment was previously reserved for competition machines just a few years ago; seeing it on a Ducati 1198 with a listed price of €17,990 changes the perspective. The border between the road and the track has never felt so blurred on a homologated motorcycle.

The steel ALS 450 trellis frame hasn't changed, and it had no reason to. Its rigidity is calibrated to handle power levels far exceeding what most riders can exploit. The fully adjustable 43 mm Showa inverted fork holds its own against the best components in the segment; only the Ducati 1198 S goes further with Öhlins. Brembo Monobloc four-piston calipers bite down on 330 mm semi-floating discs with a progression and power that makes many Japanese competitors blush. The GSX-R1000 and the CBR1000RR of that era offer more everyday versatility, but none deliver that organic sensation provided by the Bologna V-twin in the hands of an experienced rider.

This is precisely where the real debate around the Ducati 1198 takes place. Its 830 mm seat height, short wheelbase of 1,430 mm, and impetuous character make it a machine that demands respect and solid experience. It is not designed for beginners, nor even for weekend riders seeking a comfortable tool to devour miles of national roads. The Ducati 1198 is aimed at riders who have already experienced several displacements, who know their limits and want to push them on the track or on lightly trafficked mountain passes. In this respect, the used Ducati 1198 represents a serious opportunity for those who want to access this level of performance without paying the new price. Searching for a used Ducati 1198 also means stepping up the suspension equipment.

The 2011 model consolidates what the previous generation had sketched out: a sportbike that fully embraces its extreme character without seeking to camouflage it behind excessive electronic aids. The DTC remains for moments of panic, the quickshifter to smooth out gear changes during acceleration, but the machine first speaks through its 170 horsepower and the dry sound of its 90-degree twin. Between the base Ducati 1198 and the R that races in Superbike, the standard version occupies a precise place: that of a road machine with a purely racing DNA, financially accessible compared to the top of the range, but never fully tamed.
