Overview
There are machines that transcend their era. Not because they are perfect, but because they crystallize a moment, a clean break with everything that came before. When the 916 arrived in 1994, it did not simply fill a slot in Bologna's catalogue; it redefined the aesthetic and technical rules of the genre, imposing its signature on everything that would follow. Twenty-five years later, Ducati could not let this anniversary pass without making its mark.

The answer is called the Panigale V4 S 25° Anniversario 916, and it does not go unnoticed. Limited to 500 numbered units, it summons the legacy of a living legend to better establish its own legitimacy. The godfather chosen by Ducati is Carl Fogarty, four-time Superbike World Champion aboard the original 916. "Foggy" is more than a marketing endorsement; he is the very soul of this project, and his iconic gaze reproduced beneath the carbon racing screen is a reminder of just how much this motorcycle belongs as much to the history of competition as to transalpine industrial heritage.
Technically, the base is that of the Panigale V4 S with its semi-active Öhlins suspension, onto which Ducati has grafted components drawn directly from the V4 R. The front frame meets Ducati Corse specifications — no small matter when you consider the difference in register between a road-going S version and an R honed for the track. The 90-degree L-shaped V4 of 1,103 cc delivers 214 horsepower at 13,000 rpm and 124.5 Nm of torque at 10,000 rpm. Those figures, carried by a machine weighing just 173 kg dry and 194 kg fully fuelled, produce a power-to-weight ratio that few rivals can match. The specification sheet is completed by forged magnesium Marchesini wheels, a dry clutch with its characteristically sharp and mechanical sound, a homologated titanium Akrapovic exhaust, and a generous use of carbon fibre wrapping the mudguard, swingarm protector, and engine covers.
The electronics keep pace with DTC EVO 2 and DQS EVO 2 for seamless up- and down-shifts. This is a far cry from the original 916, which demanded genuine mastery to extract the best from it; this Anniversario remains a connoisseur's motorcycle — the 830 mm seat height and aggressive riding position see to that — but it surrounds the rider with a level of sophistication that the nineteen-nineties could never have imagined. The four-piston radially-mounted Brembo calipers bite on two 330 mm discs with surgical precision, and the 16-litre tank allows for a few dozen kilometres before the inevitable fuel stop.
There remains the question of price, as €41,900 positions this special series beyond even the standard V4 R. That is the price of myth, and Ducati knows it all too well. This is not a motorcycle you buy to ride every day; it is a collector's piece bearing a certificate of nobility, intended for those who wish to own a chapter in two-wheeled history rather than a mere speed tool. For 500 enthusiasts around the world, that debate will be settled quickly.
