Overview

When Bologna decides to play the national identity card, it doesn't do things by halves. The Ducati 1098 S Tricolore is not simply a matter of paint: it's a political statement on two wheels, a limited edition produced for 2007 only, aimed at those who believe a soulless sportbike is a failed sportbike.

Ducati 1098 S Tricolore

Green, white, red. The combination rings a bell, and that's no accident. In 1988, the 851 already wore these colors to introduce the first production Desmoquattro. The lineage is claimed, embraced, almost provocative. But where the 851 wore a livery shaped by its era, the Tricolore receives a considerably more refined graphic treatment, with frame and wheels highlighted in gold paint that cuts sharply against the national colors. The result is coherent, almost elegant, and identifiable from two hundred meters away.

Beneath the bodywork lies an uncompromising 1098 S as a foundation. The 1099 cc 90° L-twin Testastretta Evoluzione engine delivers 160 horsepower at 9,750 rpm and 122.6 Nm at 8,000 rpm, all contained within 171 kg dry. This power-to-weight ratio places the machine in a class of its own, well ahead of a Honda CBR1000RR of the era or a Suzuki GSX-R1000, both of which carry a size handicap for lesser on-paper performance. The 43 mm Öhlins inverted fork, forged aluminum Marchesini wheels, and Öhlins 46PRC rear shock compose a chassis package with nothing left to prove on track. The Ducati 1098 S Tricolore limited edition adds to this equipment a pair of carbon Termignoni Racing exhausts with adapted engine mapping: around ten additional horsepower and a sound level of 102 dB that assumes you frequent circuits more than residential areas.

The onboard data acquisition system warrants attention. A USB key housed under the passenger seat captures telemetry from each session. This was equipment found on competition machines at the time, not production hypersports. For the amateur rider looking to improve seriously, it's a concrete argument. For the one simply seeking a beautiful machine to ride on weekends, it's a feature they will probably never use.

This point actually encapsulates the paradox of the Ducati 1098 S Tricolore on the current used market. The bike speaks to a narrow audience: experienced riders comfortable with an aggressive riding position, an 820 mm seat height, and an engine that demands to be worked hard to fully express its character. At 23,995 euros at launch price, it made no claims toward democratization. Today, the examples circulating on the used market carry the dual value of a fully realized sportbike and a collector's edition produced for a single year. The 916 had laid the foundations of a style. The 1098 S Tricolore consolidated them with more power, better technology, and a patriotism asserted down to the smallest detail.
