Overview
Imagine crossing Nevada at dawn, the sun skimming the desert plateaus, with a 1,802 cm³ boxer-twin engine rumbling softly at 3,000 rpm beneath your thighs. That's exactly the fantasy that Munich has materialized with this R 18 Transcontinental: an American-style grand tourer, conceived by Bavarian engineers obsessed with their own heritage. The result is imposing, literally, since the machine weighs 433 kg fully fueled. Let's just say that the beast isn't for those with shaky hands during maneuvers.

The Big Boxer remains the central character in this whole story. This air-cooled flat-twin develops 91 horsepower at 4,750 rpm, modest figures on paper, but the torque is elsewhere: 162.7 Nm available from 3,000 rpm, with more than 150 Nm accessible within the wide 2,000-4,000 rpm range. BMW even took advantage of the transition to Euro 5+ to gain an additional 5 Nm. In concrete terms, this means you never need to search for lower gears on the highway. The Transcontinental moves like a locomotive, propelled by this shaft drive that eliminates all chain maintenance and provides the velvety smoothness characteristic of Munich's boxers. Faced with an Indian Pursuit or a Harley-Davidson Road Glide, the German engine cultivates a different philosophy: less sonic theatricality, more mechanical efficiency.
The technical specifications of the BMW R 18 Transcontinental reveal a tubular steel double cradle frame directly inherited from the R 5 of 1936, with a swingarm that embraces the drive shaft in a resolutely retro style. The suspension is fixed for the rider, no adjustments possible, BMW fully embracing this design choice: the rear preload automatically adapts to the load, duo or luggage included. The 49 mm fork offers 120 mm of travel, identical to the rear. The front dual-disc brake with four-piston calipers coupled with Full Integral ABS is serious, reassuring for a machine of this size.

The standard equipment is generous, and this is where the real commercial battle takes place. Four round analog gauges plus a 10.25-inch TFT screen branded "Berlin Built," rigid saddlebags, top case, heated seat, Marshall two-speaker audio system, fairing with a generous windscreen and adjustable deflectors, Rain/Roll/Rock riding modes, dynamic cruise control, reverse gear, traction control. ACC with radar, however, remains an option. For those wondering about the price of a BMW R 18 Transcontinental, the entry ticket is set at 29,820 euros, clearly positioning the machine in the premium segment. It’s more than a Road Glide Limited, but BMW responds with a finish and embedded technology that doesn’s really have an equivalent in the American cruiser world.

Our opinion of the BMW R 18 Transcontinental leans towards pragmatic admiration rather than unconditional enthusiasm. It's a machine built for a specific profile: the long-distance rider who wants to travel far, comfortably, with a passenger and luggage, without ever looking like an ordinary tourist. The contained seat height of 739 mm is good news for those of average height, but this weight of 433 kg will impose constant vigilance in town and on sloping parking lots. The maximum speed of 178 km/h unambiguously indicates that this isn’t a machine for timed laps. It's a machine for kilometers. Those seeking bite, agility, a sporty temperament, will pass their way. For others, those who measure pleasure in hours in the saddle rather than in seconds on the stopwatch, the R 18 Transcontinental is probably the most accomplished machine in its category in 2025.
