Overview

When Munich decides to build a family of customs, it doesn’t do it halfway. BMW laid the foundation with the R 18, then stacked the variants like a house that grows: the Classic first, then the Bagger B, and now this Roctane which wedges itself between the two, elbows on the table, with a look that’s looking for trouble on Friday night.

BMW R 18 Roctane

The Roctane doesn't play the card of classic elegance or assumed touring. It wants dark, taut, hot-rod. Engine painted black with valve covers that shine like ill-gotten jewels, high handlebars, black risers, black controls, long rear skirt that trails like a cape. The aesthetics hold the road and the 21-inch front wheel gives the whole thing the look of a stage beast advancing towards the light. The optical unit integrates the old-fashioned speedometer, a nod to BMWs from decades when minimalism wasn't a stylistic choice but a constraint. It's well done. The stepped seat and star-studded locknuts on the exhaust outlets complete the picture without overdoing it. Almost.

The only aesthetic misstep, and it's recurrent throughout the R 18 range, is this exhaust pipe on the right side that hides the shaft drive. A beautiful visible mechanical element is spoiled by a cumbersome silencer. A shame, because this exposed shaft drive is part of the Bavarian charm. The rigid saddlebags, for their part, add 27 liters and 10 kilos of capacity per side and integrate naturally without visually weighing down the line. Practical, without transforming the beast into a delivery van.

BMW R 18 Roctane

Under the steel double cradle, the 1802 cm3 flat-twin is still the same behemoth. 91 horsepower at 4750 rpm, that's reasonable for the genre. What makes the difference is the torque: 157.9 Nm available from 3000 rpm, with a nice range of traction between 2000 and 4000 rpm. You ride on torque, not on power, and that's exactly what you ask of this type of engine. The six-speed shaft transmission does the job without drama. The three riding modes Rain, Roll and Rock allow you to dose the electronics without rewriting the machine's DNA. Because the electronics are there, discreet but present: ASC traction control, MSR torque regulation, keyless start, cruise control. The PRO finish adds adaptive headlights, heated grips, reverse gear and Hill Start Control Pro. Nothing essential, but all of this is negotiated when you ask what the price of a BMW R 18 Roctane is, displayed at 26,200 euros in base version.

BMW R 18 Roctane

374 kilos full. This figure deserves a pause. The 720 mm seat is accessible, the three 300 mm discs with four-piston calipers at the front and Integral ABS are reassuring, but this mass demands respect and experience. Offering a detuned version at 47.5 horsepower for the A2 license is a bold gamble. A young motorcyclist starting out on an engine like this quickly learns that figures don't guarantee lightness. Facing the Harley-Davidson Road King and the Indian Springfield, the Roctane occupies a similar territory, that of a character-driven bagger, between chrome tradition and rock attitudes. The Bavarian difference lies in this flat engine whose cylinders protrude from the flanks like fists on the table, and in a finish that flirts with German rigor even when it plays the rebels. The Americans have history, culture, myth. BMW has technique and ambition. In this niche segment, the argument is not without weight.
