Overview
Look at it head-on, with this 21-inch wheel that cuts sharply across the pavement and this circular optical unit where the speedometer is directly embedded in the headlight, as on the pre-war boxers. BMW isn't playing the card of overly sentimental nostalgia. The Roctane is a bagger that assumes its intentions from the first glance: dark, massive, slightly menacing. The engine is painted black, the handlebars are black, the levers are black, the double-branch gear selector is black. The chrome is reserved for the valve covers and the star-shaped counter nuts on the exhaust outlets. A calculated contrast, almost too worked, but it works.

The 1802 cm³ boxer is the true boss of this machine. At 3000 rpm, it already releases 157.9 Nm of torque, a value that far exceeds what the Harley-Davidson Road King or the Indian Springfield offer in this segment. Maximum power peaks at 91 horsepower at 4750 rpm, which isn't the figure that impresses on a spec sheet, but it's the constant availability of torque between 2000 and 4000 rpm that defines the character of this engine. The six-speed gearbox with shaft drive does the rest with that typically Bavarian smoothness, even if the straight exhaust pipe partially hides the exposed shaft, an aesthetic defect that BMW has never corrected on the entire R 18 family. A pity.
The chassis borrows the common base of the entire range: steel double cradle with a deceptively rigid appearance, 49 mm telescopic fork, single rear shock absorber with 90 mm of travel. The wheelbase differs by a few millimeters compared to the other R 18 models, mainly due to the wheel dimensions. At 374 kg fully fueled for a 720 mm seat height, the Roctane isn't tamed by anyone. BMW offers a version restricted to 47.5 hp for the A2 license, which is technically possible but frankly questionable on a motorcycle of this size. It's not a machine for beginners.

The onboard electronics are consistent with the premium positioning: keyless start, ASC traction control, MSR engine torque control, cruise control. Three riding modes Rain, Roll and Rock adapt the engine behavior according to the conditions. Adaptive cornering lights, heated grips, reverse gear or lane departure warning require opting for the PRO finish, which drives the bill beyond the 26,200 euros displayed as the entry-level price. This is precisely the question that many ask before signing: what is the price of a BMW R 18 Roctane once properly equipped? Count several thousand euros extra depending on the options chosen.

Faced with the Road King and the Springfield, the Roctane plays a different part. It doesn't have the American cultural pedigree, but it offers a flat engine with a different blend, a more rigorous finish and more complete electronics as standard. Its dark hot-rod style also distinguishes it from the more restrained Classic and Transcontinental versions of the range. The 27-liter rigid saddlebags are enough for a weekend, not for a grand tour. This dark bagger is aimed at the experienced touring rider who wants visual character as well as muscle under the knees, without the country patina of Milwaukee or the overly polished pure Touring side. A narrow niche, but BMW occupies it with conviction.
