Overview

Imagine 260 kilograms all fueled up, a seat 890 mm from the ground, and a 30-liter aluminum tank perched on the back like a camel’s hump. That's what the 2015 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure offers, and yet, the order books don't empty. It's not a paradox; it's a globetrotter's logic: this motorcycle isn't trying to seduce those short on time, it speaks to those who want to go really far, really loaded, on roads that barely deserve the name.

BMW R 1200 GS Adventure

What distinguishes the Adventure from the standard GS isn't just a larger tank. The philosophy is different from the suspensions onwards: the front Telelever and the rear Paralever each gain an additional 20 mm of travel compared to the classic GS, for 210 mm at the front and 220 at the rear. The crash bars encircling the cylinder heads aren't there just to look good on BMW R 1200 GS Adventure stickers for weekend owners; they absorb the real spills, those that happen when you force your way through a Moroccan track at dusk. The wide enduro-style footrests, the recalibrated kickstand, the vibration damper between the gearbox and the cardan shaft: every technical detail tells the same project. This machine is built for abuse, not for posing.

The 1170 cc liquid-cooled boxer engine, introduced on the GS in 2013, arrives here with a notable peculiarity: the crankshaft is weighted down by 950 grams to smooth out jolts off-road. As a result, the 125 horsepower available at 7750 rpm and the 125 Nm at 6500 rpm are released with a smoothness that the direct competition, the KTM 1290 Super Adventure of the time in particular, did not offer in this register. The 6-speed gearbox integrated into the case, the cardan transmission, a consumption announced at 4.3 liters per 100 km with 30 liters on board: the theoretical range exceeds 650 km, which changes the game on routes where service stations are scarce. Those looking for a used BMW R 1200 GS Adventure know that this engine absorbs the kilometers without flinching, which explains the holding of the price on the used market.

The onboard electronics are worth stopping for. As standard, traction control ASC and two riding modes Rain and Road are sufficient for the majority of users. But it's with the Pro modes, optional, that the machine reveals its nature: Dynamic for sporty riding on the road, Enduro for off-road with rear ABS adapted to road tires, and Enduro Pro for riders who want to lock the rear ABS and work with knobby tires. Coupled with the dynamic ESA, whose semi-active damping reconfigures according to the mode chosen, the whole forms a coherent system. This option priced around 750 euros represents a real plus on varied terrains, not a marketing gimmick. The adjustable seat on two positions, 890 and 910 mm, and the option to lower it by 50 mm for shorter riders complete a serious customization picture.

The entry price displayed at 16,950 euros places the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure above most of its rivals, and it must be honest: the options catalog can quickly double the bill between luggage, the integrated GPS, heated grips and LED lighting. It's not a motorcycle for those who count their money, and BMW knows it. Its audience is seasoned wanderers, seasoned adventurers who have been preparing their departures for years, those who are still searching today for BMW R 1200 GS Adventure 2014 or 2015 ads on resale sites because they know exactly what they are looking for. From the R 1150 GS of the 2000s to the recent versions, each generation has managed to retain what the next improved; it is rare to be reported. The 2015 remains, to this day, one of the most balanced expressions of the concept.
