Overview
Imagine a machine that claims to cross continents without a second thought, with the evocative name Worldcrosser tattooed on its 23-liter tank. Yamaha is launching its trump card into the already crowded arena of maxi-trails, a segment where you must reassure both the touring rider and titillate the adventurer. For nearly €17,500, this 2016 Ténéré is not just an aesthetic variation; it's a statement on wheels, a promise of autonomy and robustness against the BMW R 1200 GS and other Triumph Tiger Explorers.

Under the tank, the inline 1200 cm3 twin-cylinder engine delivers a power of 112 horsepower, but it is its torque of 117 Nm, available from low RPM, that constitutes its true character. It pulls relentlessly, with a linearity that sometimes lacks flair compared to the basic growl of a BMW boxer. Shaft drive transmission provides the serenity so appreciated on journeys, sparing chains to be greased. The announced weight of 265 kg fully fueled is felt when stationary, especially with a seat at 84.5 cm in height, but once underway, the machine regains surprising stability.
The Worldcrosser version adds a layer of equipment dedicated to off-road use. Engine guard, carbon fiber fork protectors, frame covers and anodized wear parts: Yamaha has thought of the inevitable shocks. It’s serious. Yet, one cannot help but find the approach a little timid. Where are the off-road tires, the free exhaust or the fog lights shown in the promotional photos? These accessories remain optional, which is a bit disappointing on a model with a "ready for adventure" positioning.
The technological equipment remains, however, impressive. Electronic suspensions, borrowed from the FJR 1300, offer extensive personalization. Linked brakes, switchable ABS, three-level traction control, cruise control, heated grips… The list is long. Everything is there to manage comfort and safety on the tarmac as on the trail. But this profusion of electronics raises the question: is it really the soul of a true exploration machine, or just another luxury for a trail that will spend most of its life on pavement?

Ultimately, this Super Ténéré Worldcrosser clearly targets the demanding touring rider, the one who wants to be able to leave the road without asking a thousand questions, but who does not dream of Dakar. It is more civilized, more electronic and perhaps more predictable than some competitors. It is a solid and well-equipped option, a Swiss army knife of grand touring, even if one wished it had a little more raw soul and fewer compromises. A beautiful machine, no doubt, but which plays more the card of technological versatility than that of the wild call of the open road.
