Overview
Imagine a Texan highway stretching to the horizon, a blazing sun, and beneath you 367 kilograms of Bavarian engineering effortlessly devouring the asphalt. That’s exactly the image BMW had in mind when its engineers designed the BMW K 1600 Grand America. The goal wasn't to imitate Milwaukee or adopt a Southern accent. Munich plays its own score, by its own rules, and the result is a machine that doesn't fit into any pre-established category of grand touring.

What strikes you first is the stylistic consistency. Since its introduction in 2018, derived from the K 1600 B, the Grand America has refined its proposition without changing its philosophy. The 2022 version receives adaptive headlight illumination as standard and a few surface refinements, but the silhouette remains that of a monument built for long distances. The massive, structured front contrasts with a rear that tapers cleanly, the lights integrated into the edges of the saddlebags constituting one of the most successful visual signatures in the segment. A persistent drawback since the initial versions is that the saddlebags do not accommodate a full-face helmet. The top case generously compensates, but the shortcoming remains for anyone who wants to travel solo without logistical hassles.
The heart of the machine is this inline six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1649 cc, which has no equivalent in the world of production motorcycles. 160.5 horsepower at 6750 rpm, 179.9 Nm of torque from 5250 rpm. These figures look good on paper, but they don’t tell the whole story. The engine speaks, it resonates, it undulates. The Euro 5 update necessitated two additional lambda probes and a revision of the mapping, and the result clearly leans in the right direction: the torque has progressed compared to previous generations and the maximum power is reached earlier in the rev range. From 3000 rpm, it pulls; at 5000, it propels. The six-speed shaft drive filters all of this without brutality. For those who want to compare with the competition, neither the Honda Gold Wing nor the Harley-Davidson Road Glide offer such mechanical density in such a contemporary package.

The BMW K 1600 Grand America technical specifications do not summarize the riding experience, but they outline its main features. The new generation Dynamic ESA suspension continuously adjusts the damping, between a well-calibrated Road mode for European roads and a Cruise mode that transforms the saddle into a first-class armchair. At 750 mm in height, this saddle is aimed at a rider of average build without excluding others. The 10.25-inch TFT screen inherits the technology seen on the R 1250 RT: shared navigation with on-board information, smartphone connectivity via CarPlay on versions equipped, waterproof tank compartment with USB socket. The 2.0 audio system deserves mention without rivaling the best installations on machines like the Gold Wing Tour, which features a more sophisticated chain as standard. This is the only area where the Grand America shows a noticeable lag.

The electronic arsenal is that of a premium sedan: three riding modes, traction control, active cornering ABS Pro, hill start assist, cruise control, tire pressure monitoring, motorized reverse gear, heated grips and seat. The perimeter aluminum frame integrates the engine as a stressed member, the Duolever fork with longitudinal arms offers a steering precision that American competitors do not know, and the Paralever swingarm manages the shaft drive torque without affecting the trajectory. The three 320 mm discs with four-piston calipers stop the 367 kilograms with disarming serenity. The displayed price of 30,900 euros places the BMW K 1600 Grand America 2022 in a category where budget is as important as passion. For those looking for a used BMW K 1600 Grand America, the 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 models offer an identical technical base at more accessible prices, the year-on-year evolutions remaining marginal. This machine is aimed at the experienced grand tourer who wants everything, now, without compromise. It keeps its promise with a constancy that commands respect.
