Overview
Imagine a California highway at sunrise, six inline cylinders singing behind you, 179.9 Nm of torque available at 5,250 rpm. That’s roughly the promise kept by the BMW K 1600 Grand America: that of a transcontinental journey without compromise, crafted by Munich engineers who decided to tackle the American myth of the open road head-on.

The BMW K 1600 Grand America has been around since 2018, and each model year, from the 2018 BMW K 1600 Grand America to the recent versions, has refined the formula without betraying it. The silhouette hasn’t moved a notable centimeter, and that’s a good thing. The imposing front end, the flanks that taper towards the rear, the thin luminous strips that border the side cases: the machine is immediately recognizable. One detail has been irritating from the start: the saddlebags, despite their carefully sculpted shape, can’t swallow a full-face helmet. The top case largely compensates, but you need to know that before going looking for a used BMW K 1600 Grand America and being surprised in a highway parking lot.
The 1,649 cc six-cylinder remains the heart of the project, and what a heart it is. BMW had to bring it up to Euro 5 standard, which involved delicate surgery on engine management and the addition of lambda probes. The result is an even more exploitable power curve: 160.5 hp at 6,750 rpm, but the brute force manifests itself well before that, progressively, like a long wave that rises from 3,000 rpm and breaks at the top. Faced with a Honda Gold Wing or a Harley-Davidson Road Glide, this engine develops a flexibility that V-twin cylinders simply can’t match. The Paralever double-sided swingarm absorbs acceleration reactions, the six-speed transmission works in absolute discretion.
The cockpit commands respect. The 10.25-inch screen divides the display between navigation and riding data, all linked to the smartphone app via the waterproof reservoir housing. The Dynamic ESA suspension automatically adapts to the load and the road, with two distinct settings depending on whether you want to ride or travel in a relaxed position. Heated seat, heated grips, electrically adjustable windscreen, motorized reverse gear, ABS Pro active in corners, traction control, hill start assist: the BMW K 1600 Grand America’s specifications resemble those of a German luxury sedan, not a motorcycle. The 750 mm seat height from the ground remains accessible, even for average builds, which is not always the case in this segment.

The aluminum frame, with its longitudinal Duolever fork at the front and the Paralever monobrach at the rear, offers no excuses. The 367 kg weight when ready to ride is indeed on the scale; no one is telling stories, but it disappears once in motion. BMW limits the speed to 160.9 km/h, which may irritate the most expansive riders, but never constitutes a real limitation in real-world use. The announced consumption of 5.7 liters per 100 km gives the 26.5-liter tank a theoretical range of more than 460 km: enough to swallow stages without stopping.

The price of €30,045 for the 2025 version requires serious reflection, and opinions on the BMW K 1600 Grand America on specialist forums regularly highlight this. It approaches the price of a Gold Wing, the most direct rival in terms of onboard technology. What the BMW brings in addition is that sporty-tuned six-cylinder, a contemporary silhouette that doesn’t look like a cathedral on wheels, and German precision in every control. What Honda offers in return is a dual-clutch transmission that the Grand America still lacks. For riders who accumulate kilometers on the highway, this point is lacking. The rest is difficult to contest.
