Overview
Imagine crossing Nevada at dawn, a inline-six rumbling beneath your thighs like a well-bred turbine, the saddlebags full and the sun not yet risen. That’s exactly the fantasy the BMW K 1600 Grand America seeks to sell, and it succeeds with disarming consistency. Born from an already well-established K 1600 range, this bagger with an integrated top-case marks a clear break from the European GTs in the family: here, we look west, not towards the Autobahn.

The engine is the foundation of everything. This inline-six of 1649 cc delivers 160 horsepower at 7750 rpm and, above all, 175 Nm of torque at 5250 rpm, figures that place the machine well above a Harley-Davidson Road Glide or an Indian Chieftain in terms of raw mechanical liveliness. Yet, BMW has voluntarily limited the maximum speed to 162 km/h. This is not an admission of weakness, but a statement of intent: the Grand America is not a sports bike in disguise, it’s a long-distance touring machine. The six-speed cardan transmission confirms this philosophy, as does a fuel consumption figure of 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers, which allows it, with its 26.5-liter tank, to travel over 450 kilometers before stopping.
The wet weight of 364 kg is the subject that causes concern, and it’s best to be direct on this point. Faced with a Honda Gold Wing that also exceeds 350 kg, the Grand America is not in a category of its own, but this figure demands respect when stationary and maneuvering. Once underway, it disappears into the fluidity of the rolling chassis, thanks to the Duolever suspension at the front and Paralever at the rear, with semi-active ESA Dynamic management. The seat height reduced to 750 mm since 2019 facilitates handling, and the electric reverse gear is not a gadget for tight parking spaces, it’s a necessity with this size. Those looking for a used BMW K 1600 Grand America will appreciate knowing that this lowered seat is standard on all post-2019 models, including the 2020 or 2021 version.

The standard equipment largely justifies the displayed price of 29,930 euros for the BMW K 1600 Grand America 2021. Cruise control, heated grips and seat, integrated audio, electric windscreen, Hill Start Control Pro, ABS Pro, traction control DTC and riding modes are part of the original deliverable. The 2021 version adds tire pressure monitoring, LED daytime running lights and an adaptive cornering headlight, bringing it closer to premium automotive equipment. BMW K 1600 Grand America accessories are available to go even further, including an amplified audio system housed in the top-case.

The positioning is clear and assumed. The Grand America is aimed at the long-distance rider who wants comfortable mileage, generous carrying capacity and an engine that doesn’t fatigue with use. It will not compete with a Pan America on trails, nor with an S 1000 RR on the track. But for crossing a continent on two wheels with the feeling of riding something built to rule and compass, it keeps its promises better than most. The BMW K 1600 Grand America test consistently confirms one thing that the technical specifications do not say: this motorcycle has character, and not just figures.
