Overview
Nothing stands up to a crisp morning like a well-appointed grand tourer. And the BMW K 1200 GT, for its part, is equipped for climate warfare. With its full fairing, electric windscreen, and standard heated graphics, it transforms winter into a mere meteorological anecdote. It is a machine designed to devour asphalt without compromise, a Falcon of national roads like there are almost no longer made.

It must be said that this 2003 K 1200 GT is an interesting creation, born from a rather pragmatic marketing reflection. BMW took the solid but somewhat radical foundations of the K 1200 RS, a sport touring motorcycle with a modest success, and injected a good dose of civility into it. The robust 1170 cm3 inline four-cylinder engine is retained, along with the technical platform with its famous Telelever at the front and Paralever with a rear swingarm. But the seat is widened, the aerodynamic protection is refined, and, a stroke of genius for the time, the painted saddlebags are offered as standard. Suddenly, the beast becomes a grand tourer. The new price, around €16,750, was justified by this level of equipment.
But do not be fooled, beneath its attire of a restrained traveler, the K 1200 GT retains a sporty constitution. Its engine delivers 130 horsepower at 7000 rpm and a meaty torque of 97.6 Nm from 5500 rpm. It is flexible, indestructible, and of exemplary progressiveness. On the other hand, you have to deal with the size. At 309 kg fully fueled, it commands respect. In the city, the seat height of 84 cm and its wheelbase of 1509 mm remind you that you are riding a liner. But once launched on the open road, the magic happens. Inertia disappears, stability becomes absolute, and comfort, especially with this atypical front suspension system, is a bulwark against imperfections in the road surface.
It is precisely there that the debate opens. The K 1200 GT does not seek to compete with the R 1150 RT, more focused on perfect ergonomics and total protection. It aims rather at the Yamaha FJR 1300 or the Honda Pan European, with a more "sport" character in its soul. The riding position remains engaged, piloting requires anticipation, and braking, although powerful with its two 320 mm front discs, requires getting used to the particular feel of the BMW master cylinder. It is not a motorcycle for beginners, but for an experienced globetrotter who seeks autonomy and breath without giving up a certain dynamism.
Today, searching for a used BMW K 1200 GT on Le Bon Coin reveals a motorcycle with character, often well maintained. The 2003 to 2009 models represent a good compromise. It is wise to consult a detailed technical specification sheet or a BMW K 1200 GT workshop manual before purchasing, as certain mechanical points, such as the clutch or the injectors, deserve a discerning eye. For those who accept its weight and attitude, it remains a top-flight tourer, capable of transcontinental journeys without a grimace. A machine that has aged with a certain class, far from the sometimes aseptic evolutions of its successors.
