Overview

When a motorcycle carries the GS badge, it carries the weight of a legend. The BMW G 310 GS 2022 embraces this fully, and it’s not a criticism. Look at it from afar: the proportions evoke the larger family, the raised nose, the engine guard, the seat perched at 833 mm from the ground. Then approach. 313 cm3, 175 kilos, €6,390. The myth is miniaturized, but the intention remains readable.

BMW G 310 GS

Beneath this miniature adventure bike bodywork, the water-cooled single-cylinder engine develops 34 horsepower at 9,250 rpm and 28 Nm at 7,500 rpm. Modest figures, accepted, calibrated for the A2 license and mixed journeys. The BMW G 310 GS top speed is capped at around 141 km/h, which clearly defines the playing field. The 2022 version, however, brings significant adjustments to this known engine: compliance with Euro5 standards, an anti-dribble clutch that relieves the right hand and avoids lockups during deceleration, an electronic throttle for a more precise touch of throttle, and idle speed management during startup to limit unexpected stalls. Nothing revolutionary, but a craftsman’s work on details that were lacking in the first generations. The BMW G 310 GS fuel consumption displays 3.3 liters per hundred, which transforms its 11.5-liter tank into a decent range for daily use.

What truly distinguishes this engine from other single-cylinder engines in its category is the architecture of its inverted cylinder head, with the intake on the front side. The center of gravity descends, the front gains bite, the machine responds more frankly. The tubular trellis frame borrows from the 310 R with a few tweaks to the steering column, the swingarm lengthened by 46 mm brings the wheelbase to 1,420 mm to stabilize the whole. The 41 mm inverted fork and the central shock absorber each offer 180 mm of travel, enough to swallow Sunday forest paths without brutalizing the spine. The 19-inch front rim represents the classic urban trail compromise: neither as playful as a 21-inch off-road rim, nor as precise as a 17-inch rim on asphalt. The brakes, a 300 mm front disc with a Bybre four-piston radial caliper and a rear disc managed by a single-piston caliper, ensure deceleration with ABS on guard.

BMW G 310 GS

The BMW G 310 GS 2022, priced new at €6,390, places it in a well-populated arena. The KTM 390 Adventure displays similar power with a more sporty temperament; the Kawasaki Versys-X 300 is cheaper but lacks character; the Suzuki V-Strom 250 reassures without stimulating. The BMW Motorrad, sporty BMW G 310 GS, standard, sells something different from its rivals: an ADN, a visual heritage, the promise of belonging to the GS family without paying the price of an R 1250. It’s its strongest argument, and also its main weakness when a 1.80 m tall rider seeks a more accessible seat or a load capacity for a real long-distance journey.

BMW G 310 GS

Manufacturing in India by TVS in Bangalore is nothing to be ashamed of in this segment. KTM does the same with its small-displacement engines, and no one begrudges a 390 Adventure on an alpine pass. What counts is the consistency of the product. The BMW G 310 GS, used, negotiates well on the used market precisely because the motorcycle ages without bad surprises. For a beginner looking to progress, for an urban dweller wanting to escape on weekends without emptying their bank account, or for an experienced rider seeking a second, light and versatile machine, the 310 GS fulfills its contract with honesty. It doesn’t try to be what it is not. In the category of small trail bikes, that’s already a lot.
