Overview
When BMW puts a line through eleven years of loyal service rendered by the F 800 R, it’s not to offer a simple cosmetic update. The BMW F 900 R represents a clear break, a complete overhaul of a formula that was beginning to show its age. The 895 cm³ parallel-twin engine, directly derived from the F 850 GS block with an 86 mm bore and a 77 mm stroke, produces 105 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and 92 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Compared to the previous 800, the gain reaches 15 horsepower. This is not insignificant in a segment where every horsepower counts.

The engine hasn’t simply grown; it has been redesigned from its foundations. Forged pistons, a compression ratio increased to 13.1:1, crankshaft pins offset by 90 degrees, new cylinder heads, Euro5 homologation: BMW Motorrad didn’t do things halfway. The result? A sporty BMW F 900 R motorcycle that now looks the MT-09, Triumph Street Triple, and Z 900 in the eye. It doesn’t outperform them all on paper, but it enters the conversation with a credibility that the F 800 had lost. The 6-speed gearbox receives an anti-slip clutch that smooths out engagement, and a version restricted to 95 horsepower is available for A2 license holders, even if unlocking to the 105 horsepower will not be possible.
The chassis deserves as much attention as the engine. BMW has abandoned the traditional aluminum spars for a steel structure inherited from the GS, adapted here to a more urban and sporty vocation. The engine is stressed-member, the 43 mm inverted fork offers 135 mm of travel, the rear monoshock offers 142 mm of stroke with preload and rebound adjustment. The riding position has been corrected forward, with an advanced handlebar and raised footpegs. The seat height of 770 mm remains accessible, making this machine a serious option for a rider of average height looking to progress. The 211 kg when fully fueled constitutes the main drawback: it’s 20 kg heavier than an MT-09, and no one can claim that it isn’t felt on exit from a tight corner.
The electronic equipment also marks a clear break with the previous generation. The 6.5-inch TFT screen is controlled intuitively via a multi-controller ring on the handlebar, smartphone connectivity is integrated, and simplified navigation is accessible directly from the dashboard. As standard, two riding modes Rain and Road frame the disengageable ASC anti-slip control. The Dynamic and Dynamic Pro modes, available as an option, provide access to the DTC, to the MSR engine braking management, to the ABS Pro and the DBC dynamic braking control. The Active pack adds a bidirectional quickshifter and an IMU inertial sensor. The BMW F 900 R technical specifications reveal a motorcycle that can be customized endlessly, provided the wallet can keep up.

Braking entrusts its seriousness to two four-piston Brembo radial calipers clamping onto 320 mm discs at the front, with a single 265 mm disc at the rear. Simple and effective. The announced consumption of 4.2 liters per hundred, combined with a 13-liter tank, gives a theoretical range of just over 300 km. This is consistent with the positioning of the machine, neither a grand tourer nor a track weapon. Displayed at €9,490 at launch, the BMW F 900 R price sits in the upper range of the segment, which is justified by the richness of the standard equipment and the German manufacturing quality. For those looking for a used BMW F 900 R, the first generations since 2020 have aged well and retain their value.

This roadster is aimed at an intermediate rider who wants a versatile everyday motorcycle, capable of handling weekend getaways without complaint. Neither an absolute beginner nor a hardened track rider. Someone who appreciates technology without being a slave to the stopwatch.
