Overview

Eleven years of faithful service, a few cosmetic touch-ups along the way, and then, there it is: the F 800 R retires. Munich doesn’t replace a motorcycle; Munich redefines a category. The BMW F 900 R isn't an update; it's a deliberate break with everything that defined its predecessor’s DNA, chain on the right side, raised exhaust on the left, under-seat fuel tank included. Originality changes sides, and that's a good thing.

BMW F 900 R

Visually, the BMW F 900 R clearly takes inspiration from the larger R 1250 R. The front headlight adopts a predatory look that has nothing to do with the friendly gaze of the 800. The flanks narrow, the rear muscles up, the overall line gains nervousness, losing apparent docility. It's a motorcycle that wants to intimidate, within the limits of Bavarian etiquette. For riders seeking a sporty BMW roadster BMW Motorrad motorcycle, the BMW F 900 R without moving up a category, the message is clear.

The heart of the matter is the 895 cm3 inline twin-cylinder engine, borrowed from the F 850 GS and seriously reworked. Forged pistons, redesigned cylinder heads, crankshaft with 90-degree offset connecting rods, compression ratio increased to 13.1:1: this isn't optimization; it's a reconstruction. The result: 105 horsepower at 8500 rpm and 92.2 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm. Fifteen horsepower more than the F 800, ten more than the trail bike that lent it its engine. The six-speed gearbox receives an anti-backlash clutch that makes downshifts noticeably less acrobatic. For A2 license holders, a detuned version with 95 horsepower exists, but be aware that it is not possible to de-tune it to reach the 105 horsepower of the full-power version. The question "How to de-tune a BMW F 900 R?" therefore has a simple answer: it's not planned.

Facing the MT-09, Z 900, or Street Triple, the BMW F 900 R’s technical specifications reveal an engine that plays in the same league without necessarily dominating the debates. It's not the most powerful engine in the segment. But Munich has built a coherent motorcycle around it. The steel tubular frame partially incorporates the structure of the F 850 GS, with the engine as a stressed member. The 43 mm inverted fork has 135 mm of travel, the rear mono-shock offers 142 mm, both with a noticeable improvement over the previous generation. The riding position leans more forward than before, handlebars and footrests repositioned for a more engaged riding style. It weighs 211 kg fully fueled, or 9 kg more than the F 800 R. This is the only real drawback that can be addressed to it: twenty kilos more than an MT-09, for an engine that doesn't always compensate for the difference.

BMW F 900 R

The electronics mark the most visible break with the previous generation. A 6.5-inch color TFT screen operable with the thumb, smartphone connectivity, four riding modes including Rain and Road as standard and Dynamic and Dynamic Pro as options. Traction control ASC is now standard and becomes DTC when opting for the Pro modes, opening access to the engine braking control MSR, ABS Pro, and DBC. An Active pack adds a bidirectional quickshifter and an IMU inertial sensor. The list of optional BMW F 900 R accessories continues to grow with cornering lights, keyless start, cruise control, semi-active suspension. Braking entrusted to Brembo aligns two radial four-piston calipers on 320 mm discs at the front, a single piston on 265 mm at the rear.

BMW F 900 R

Priced at €8,870 at launch, the BMW F 900 R’s price places the Bavarian motorcycle at the top of the segment range. On the BMW F 900 R used market, 2020 and 2021 models remain well-valued, proof that the buyer is not mistaken about the solidity of the investment. This roadster targets an audience of experienced riders who want a machine capable on open roads as well as on small departmental roads, without the complexity of a liter-class bike or the anonymity of an entry-level roadster. The bet is coherent. Not revolutionary, but coherent.
