Overview

When Benelli resurrected the Tornado in the early 2000s, few were betting much on this small manufacturer from Pesaro. Twenty years later, the 2012 TnT 899 is a reminder that Italians still know how to design machines that turn heads, even without the raw power that intimidates. Because that is precisely the point of this 899 version: to make a three-cylinder engine accessible that, in its 1130 form, was more of a gamble than an everyday proposition.

Benelli TnT 899 Tonado Naked Tre

Let's take the numbers straight. One hundred and twenty horsepower at 10,000 rpm, 77.5 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm, 199 kg dry for a machine listed at €10,990. On paper, that's in line with what a Street Triple R or a Triumph Speed Triple offers in its less supercharged guise. Except that the Benelli is not a Triumph. It doesn't try to convince with rational arguments. Its steel tube trellis frame painted red, its carbon front mudguard, its contrast-stitched seat — all of this tells a different story. A story of attitude, of character, of small details that prove someone thought about the object beyond the spec sheet. The 50 mm inverted fork, the two 320 mm front discs gripped by four-piston calipers, the 120 mm of travel at each end — this is serious hardware. No radial caliper mounts, it should be noted, a choice that raises an eyebrow when compared to what the competition offers at the same price point.

The Benelli three-cylinder has a soul of its own. It's not the sterile shriek of a Japanese four-cylinder pushed to its limits, nor the deep rumble of an English twin. It's something in between, more organic, with a sonic presence and a throttle response that builds noticeably past 6,000 rpm. Engine management lacks refinement at low revs — you feel it in the throttle-to-brake transitions — but the motor redeems itself in the mid-range where it proves responsive and communicative. The 820 mm seat height and the 215 kg wet weight serve as a reminder to riders of more modest stature, and urban manoeuvring demands commitment. This is not a motorcycle you tame in an afternoon.

Living with the TnT 899 means accepting its Italian compromises. Wind protection is non-existent, the controls are firm, and don't count on any passenger comfort despite the redesigned seat. The simplified dashboard, with its single dial and digital window, feels a little austere for a machine sold at this price. These imperfections, taken together, mean the Benelli is not suited to the versatile rider looking for an all-purpose daily mount. On the other hand, for an intermediate rider who wants something different, less templated, a little more unpredictable than the Japanese or even British competition, the TnT 899 offers a sharp character that few roadsters in this segment can rival.

There is also an S version that adds a two-up seat, a gold-anodised fork, and revised suspension for a few hundred euros more. An investment worth considering if you want to push the setup further. By choosing the 899 displacement over the devastating 1130, Benelli gambled on accessibility without sacrificing the aesthetics or the chassis. The gamble pays off.
