Overview

A BMW F 900 XR costing less? Much less than a Yamaha Tracer 9? That’s unlikely under normal circumstances, and improbable in general. Yet, it’s true, with a price tag of €10,500 for the BMW. This is a promotional price valid until the end of March. There’s all the more reason to consider this crossover, subtly revamped in 2025.

With the rear lights integrated into the turn signals and 1 Nm of additional torque in the engine? Yes, but that’s nothing. There’s more interesting: you can tell it’s got a spark, that it needs to be entertained quickly. The my25 version receives new wheels, 1.8 kilos lighter. A real asset for agility. Combined with a lighter battery, reduced by 800 grams, the total mass is reduced by 3 kilos. As it also receives a new fork with more settings (compression and rebound), it’s undeniable that it will want to turn with more exuberance. The rider will take advantage of this to judge the optimization of the windscreen.

As with every evolution, the price increases. But this time, BMW is quite generous regarding the equipment offered: the "Dynamic" riding mode, heated grips, hand protectors, a USB-C port, adaptive cornering headlight, dynamic traction control DTC (more performant than the ASC anti-slip control), active curve ABSPro, Dynamic Brake Control (it prevents acceleration when braking) and residual engine torque control MSR. The brand has not only made the engine compatible with Euro5+, but also really wants to make this crossover more attractive.

Which could rightly be considered the little brother of the S 1000 XR. It’s undeniable that the F 900 XR cultivates a family resemblance. Except its lighter belly, its more youthful face, its less loaded rear section and the freshness of its lines give it a much more adolescent and slender appearance. You’ll swear the 900 weighs 50 kilos less than the 1000 (11 kilos in reality).

The road motorcycle has never had so many different aspects. Technical bridges also allow for extended explorations. At Yamaha, the Tracer 9 is the “SUV” derivative of the MT-09. It’s pretty much the same for the 900 BM: the R roadster and the XR trail are intimately linked. We find in one and the other a perimeter frame made of steel beams. It firmly holds the engine, to serve as a stiffening element. The rear subframe is specific; except for the aluminum swingarm, which also comes from the GS. Then, the differences will increase. Slightly, like the footrests fixed to a large plate and no longer directly on the frame. More significantly with the suspension.

As on the roadster F 900 R, the front end shows determination with an inverted 43 mm fork, radial 4-piston brake calipers and 320 mm discs. Hardware for somewhat or very excited roadsters. Except that the F 900 XR plays its cards and stands tall. The suspension travel is increased, with 170 mm at the front and 172 mm for the rear mono-shock. Thus raised, and given the handlebar position, the rider will have a feeling of dominating the road, of appreciating it from above, as is fitting for trails and other machines that conquer it. In front, the tank is tired of steel, and prefers to spread out of plastic. The seat height is reasonable for this type of machine, at 820 mm. BMW has provided enough solutions to revise this altitude. Between the different seats and the low-profile setting, the saddle can be fixed from 775 to 845 mm.

The engine has decided to be more assertive. When you defend a certain notion of sport, you need a fairly responsive answer. The F 900 XR displays 105 horsepower from its 895 cm3, which it seeks at 8500 rpm. Torque is established at 9.5 mkg, at the maximum. A2 license holders are not forgotten. A special 70 kW version will be declined, in order to be able to restrict it to 48 horses / 35 kW.

Since BMW launched its color screen, and competitors are doing the same, it is impossible to go back to models with needles or LCDs. Except for vintage. The 6.5-inch dashboard receives graphics inspired by those of the S 1000 RR. Everything is controlled from the left multi-controller button. As standard, BMW makes the judicious effort to integrate its connectivity system. The functions of the phone are thus accessible with the motorcycle, to listen to music, receive calls, or benefit from simplified GPS guidance.

The F 900 XR has another weapon to surprise: its price. Surprisingly well placed, right in the wake of the Tracer 9 and Tiger 900. Except to enjoy the high-tech it can sweat, you have to tap into the options sector. An area where BMW has skillfully worked the temptation. Where to start? With the Keyless Ride, which allows you to leave the key in your pocket and automatically lock / unlock the contact, steering and fuel cap... Or with the Dynamic ESA suspension, whose will adjusts the rear damper in a thousandth of a second – according to your driving and the chosen theme, « Road » more supple or « Dynamic » more rigid.

If that were all there was to it. We also find the intelligent emergency call that can put you in contact with the BMW Call Center. From there, the rescue chain is put in place. When the leg is put back in place, we can use even more modules, such as the Up&Down shifter, the center stand or the cruise control.

For the riding modes, the endowment is in two parts. As standard, the F 900 XR receives the "Road", "Rain" and "Dynamic". These manage the throttle response, ABS and traction control. On the options side, there is the "Dynamic Pro", to access more parameters.

The BMW F 900 XR is defined as a mix of sport, touring and experience. It mainly takes the same ambition as the S 1000 XR in a more reasonable format. The “mid-size” twin-cylinder is sufficiently effective to rub shoulders with the heart of the segment.

The riding modes:

- The "Road" mode offers optimal gas admission and the ABSPro and DTC systems are able to provide ideal performance on all roads. The MSR is also in the maximum position here.

- In "Rain" mode, the gas admission is supple and the ABSPro and DTC systems take into account the condition of the road in their setting characteristics, when the road surface is wet and therefore more slippery. The MSR engine torque regulation provides maximum assistance.

- In "Dynamic", the engine setting obeys an optimal gas admission and the DTC and ABSPro systems are adapted to high road friction coefficients, the front wheel and rear wheel lift-off detection only intervene later. The intervention of the MSR engine torque regulation is also reduced. The default setting for Dynamic ESA – where this function is available – is the « Dynamic » damper setting.

- The "Dynamic Pro" mode offers the very sporty rider all possibilities to adapt the machine optimally to his own desires and needs. Three accelerator characteristics, three ABS settings and four DTC settings are available. The level of intervention of the control systems can thus be adapted according to the desires to a very sporty riding style, which can go as far as deactivating the lift-off assistants and a very late intervention of all control systems.
