Overview
Benelli built its reputation on a three-cylinder engine that has been turning heads since the original Tornado. The TnT 899, released in 2010, comes directly from that lineage, carrying the same genetic blueprint as the 1130 version: the same steel trellis frame, the same 50 mm inverted fork, the same tubular swingarm, the same carnivorous-insect silhouette that never goes unnoticed in a parking lot. The difference lies in displacement, and therefore in price. Under the 10,000 euro mark — at exactly 9,900 euros — the Pesaro manufacturer opens up a market that the larger-displacement version had firmly locked shut.

Don't be fooled by that "reduced" figure of 899 cc. The three-cylinder delivers 120 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 77.5 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm, with a compression ratio of 12.5:1 and a short-stroke architecture, the bore reaching 88 mm against a mere 49.2 mm stroke. This engine lives, it runs hot, it growls at low revs and pulls hard in the mid-range. The electronic management lacks refinement in places, and the throttle transitions could be smoother, but the three-cylinder makes up for it with a sonic and physical presence that the more polished Japanese four-cylinders have never managed to replicate. Compared to a Triumph Street Triple 675 of the same era — lighter and more surgical — the Benelli opts for unapologetic brutality rather than watchmaker precision.
The chassis holds its own. The steel trellis paired with cast components provides a sound foundation, the 120 mm travel suspension on both ends favors handling over comfort, and the braking setup with two 320 mm front discs gripped by four-piston calipers does serious work, even without radial mounting. The 199 kg dry weight becomes 215 kg fully fueled — a reasonable mass for a naked of this displacement. The 820 mm seat height is no alarm for average-sized riders, but the riding position is clearly sport-oriented, not touring-friendly. The passenger makes do with a redesigned single-piece seat that offers them a little more room, which remains a modest concession.
Daily life with this machine demands a certain level of commitment. The controls are firm, aerodynamic protection is nonexistent, and the turning radius is ungenerous for urban maneuvering. Riders looking for a docile and accommodating motorcycle will naturally gravitate toward a Kawasaki Z800 or a Yamaha MT-09, better-mannered in their ways. Here, it's the opposite: the TnT 899 demands involvement, responding better when pushed than when coddled. This is a motorcycle for riders who already have a few years in the saddle, drawn to atypical Italian engineering rather than the reassurance of a Japanese benchmark.
For those who want to go further, the 899 S version adds an anodized fork, a two-part dual seat, some carbon fiber components, and upgraded suspension. A worthwhile additional investment for sport-oriented use. In standard trim, the TnT 899 Tornade Naked Tre remains a serious proposition for anyone seeking a roadster with strong character and a styling identity that few manufacturers still dare to defend. Benelli returns to its roots here, and you feel it with every twist of the throttle.
