Overview

Imagine an engineer at Benelli who, one morning, decides to graft the TnT’s ferocious three-cylinder engine onto a high-set chassis, with long-travel suspension and a seat 810 mm from the ground. The result is the TRE-K 1130, a machine difficult to classify, somewhere between a muscular sport trail and a large-displacement supermotard. A hybrid object, almost illegitimate, which doesn't belong to any clear category — and that’s precisely what makes it interesting.

Benelli 1130 TRE-K

Visually, the machine embodies its character. The sculpted tank, the steel trellis frame, and the tubular swingarm form a cohesive whole, with a wild aesthetic that contrasts with standard Asian production. In the saddle, the 205 kg dry weight quickly fades away; the motorcycle guides itself with disconcerting ease for this size. But as soon as you start looking for your bearings, assembly defects become apparent. The side plastics vibrate, the screen trembles with every acceleration, some parts seem hastily attached. For a machine priced at nearly 10,000 euros, this level of finish raises questions. Transalpine craftsmanship has its charms, but not always its rigor.

The engine, however, is another story. The inline 1130 cm3 develops 125 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 111.8 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm, figures that clearly place the TRE-K above the competition in its category. But figures only tell part of the story. This three-cylinder has an extraordinary personality: it pulls strongly from low revs, revs up with surprising velocity, and each throttle opening is accompanied by an organic, almost choleric sound. It retains a double injection mapping inherited from the TnT Sport, but the difference between the two modes remains anecdotal given how generous the engine already is by default. A few stumbles on throttle closure slightly tarnish the experience, but nothing critical. On the other hand, the original Dunlop D270 tires, with a versatile road-trail profile, are not up to the machine’s temperament. A few light slides are enough to convince you to replace them quickly with sport rubber.

Benelli 1130 TRE-K

In terms of practicality, the TRE-K accumulates small, typically Italian quirks. Finding neutral is a precision exercise, the side stand requires acrobatic flexibility, and the rearview mirrors, pretty in their triangular shape, reflect almost nothing useful. The exhaust silencer located under the seat is aesthetically successful but condemns any storage. The front braking system, entrusted to two 320 mm discs with four-piston calipers, lacks a little progressivity; the rear locks easily, which, on a machine of this size and temperament, deserves attention.

Benelli 1130 TRE-K

Facing a Yamaha TDM or a Honda Varadero, the TRE-K doesn’t play in the same psychological category. It’s not made to swallow kilometers in comfort on the highway, and the firm seat reminds you after an hour of riding. Its audience is the rider who wants the sensations of a muscular roadster with a touch of versatility, not the globetrotter with luggage. At 9,990 euros with the discount applied since 2010, the proposition becomes honest for such lively mechanics. The whole is imperfect, raw in places, but this ferocious three-cylinder remains one of the most endearing engines of its generation. Some motorcycles seduce by their balance. This one seduces by its excesses.
