Overview

Imagine a trail bike that spent its vacation with a superbike tuner. The Benelli TRE-K 1130 embodies this contradiction in its genes: it has the high stance and 50 mm inverted fork of an adventure bike, but the sharp look of a motorcycle with no intention of stopping to admire the scenery. This steel tubular trellis frame, the generous-flanked 1130 cc three-cylinder engine, the insect-like front fairing that stares at you like a predator—it all speaks more of a mountain track than an off-road trail.

The engine is the main character in this story, and it’s not shy about it. From the first few kilometers around Misano Adriatico, this 88 x 62 mm block with a compression ratio of 11.9:1 reveals a personality that far exceeds its technical specifications. Certainly, 123 horsepower at 9000 rpm and 111.8 Nm of torque at 5000 rpm are solid figures on paper. But the numbers don’t tell the story of the brutal rise in revs, nor that organic rumble that travels up the handlebars and encourages you to ride as if the road were ending in two turns. Compared to the three-cylinder engine of the TNT from which it descends directly, this engine was theoretically tamed to favor sensations at mid-range revs. If this is the sensible version, we shudder for those who would cross paths with the original. The two injection maps offer a perceptible but modest variation. The real nuance, however, is in the right wrist. A sincere piece of advice: immediately replace the standard Dunlop D270 tires, these mixed-profile tires that transform wet corners into improvisational terrain, and fit a sport tire worthy of what the mechanics can offer.

The 205 kg dry weight is quickly forgotten once in motion. The TRE-K carves through curves with a frankness that is surprising for a trail bike, and the 240 kg full of fuel never weighs down the steering. The 810 mm seat height appears taller when seated than the specs promise, but nothing is prohibitive. On the other hand, the braking deserves a refinement. The two 320 mm front discs bite with conviction, perhaps too directly for a machine of this size. The rear, a 240 mm disc with a two-piston caliper, has a hair trigger and locks the wheel without much resistance. The motorcycle remains manageable, but we expect more progressiveness on a machine priced at 13,495 euros.

Because that’s where the shoe pinches, and let’s be frank about it. For this price, some details of the finish are difficult to defend. Bodywork elements that vibrate during acceleration, an under-seat exhaust line aesthetically successful but condemning all storage, decorative mirrors with an anecdotal field of vision, a search for the neutral point that requires monastic patience. The injection also presents some stumbles on throttle application that should have been corrected before commercialization. The Ducati Multistrada 1200 and the Aprilia Caponord, direct competitors in this segment, do not have these execution flaws. The TRE-K therefore finds itself in an uncomfortable position, between the TNT roadster from which it shares a mechanical soul and the European sport trails that better keep their promises of quality.

Benelli 1130 TRE-K

Who should put their hands on this handlebar. A rider who loves raw emotions, who rides fast on winding roads, and who is willing to accept a few practical compromises to access an engine character that few machines in this category can rival. The great traveler seeking a GS or a Super Ténéré will pass by. But the one who wants the intensity of a roadster in a trail suit, with a 20.5-liter tank to lengthen the stages and a more upright riding position than a pure sportbike, that one will find in the TRE-K something rare. An engine that tells a story with every acceleration. It’s sometimes enough to forgive the rest.
