Overview
The Supermotard knows how to cultivate its success in competition, or in the 50cc class, or even with big horsepower like Ducati or KTM offer. But in the 125cc realm, few machines brandish the standard. Fortunately, Aprilia perpetuates the existence of its SX 125 to offer Supermotard to young enthusiasts.
While updating the engine to the Euro5+ standard, the firm from Noale decided to refresh its appearance. The headlight and its plate are more taut, more serious. The shoulders have been redrawn with a more vertical, more present, less prominent orientation; you’d almost guess little Dorsoduro vibes, the brand’s former large SM. The exhaust silencer becomes more compact and is adorned with black, topped by a very triangular cut of the rear section. The SX 125 seems to have gained maturity.
Regarding instrumentation, the change is very flattering. The small monochrome LCD screen has given way to a multicolored window with warm and exciting accents. Nothing is missing: speed, engine speed with color gradation, gear engaged, temperature gauge, clock, maximum speed, riding information, dual trip, consumption... or almost; a pity that Aprilia didn’t install a fuel gauge.
This motorcycle with its refined look is not meant to impress but to offer sportiness to its rider. Around its steel frame, the motorcycle announces strong suspension travel (240 – 220 mm) to absorb numerous shocks and bumps. Aprilia has emphasized technology with standard ABS with the rear wheel lift-up function. A first in the category, implemented in 2018. You won’t find this type of riding assistance on machines with much larger displacement.
You can brake hard and take lean angles, push the motorcycle in a muscular riding style to extract the best from it via its chassis. This will be more measured for the engine. The 125cc 4-stroke single-cylinder engine is clean and modern but cannot hope for better than the 15 horsepower of the legislation. Sufficient to have fun, not to send it hard. The standard has not amputated it of its power but you must now seek the maximum horsepower and torque 500 rpm higher.
The SX and its off-road cousin RX share the same engine and chassis structure. To be effective on its playing field, the SX stands out with 17-inch spoked rims, sport tires and a larger front brake disc (300 mm). A USB port is available as an option, as well as machined aluminum parts, a line of clothing, goggles and a few fashion accessories.
