Overview

When Aprilia decides to overhaul its roadster lineup, it’s not with a damp sponge but with a significant increase in displacement. The Shiver 750 hadn't convinced the crowds, too tame in a segment where the MT-09 from Yamaha and the Z 900 from Kawasaki dictated the law with aggressive triple cylinders and aggressive prices. Noale learned the lesson, and the answer is the Aprilia Shiver 900: the same 90-degree V-twin, but with an extended stroke of 11 mm to go from 750 to 896 cm3, without the bore of 92 mm changing by a tenth.

Aprilia Shiver 900

The result is surprising at first glance. Power remains capped at 95 horsepower, available at 8750 rpm. No gain on that front. But that’s not where the game is played. Torque climbs to 90 Nm at only 6500 rpm, and it's this figure that changes everyday use. The engine pulls earlier, more smoothly, with availability that makes acceleration more crisp without needing to keep the revs high. The ride-by-wire system, revised and 500 grams lighter, now manages a real traction control system, and a new electronic control unit centralizes all of this cleanly. For A2 license holders, a homologated restriction kit allows them to remain within the legal limits, making the Aprilia Shiver 900 A2 a credible option for young licensees who already aim high.

The bodywork has matured. Exit the somewhat adolescent style of the previous generation; the 900 adopts redesigned flanks, pierced with vents, a more massive engine guard that structures the silhouette, and bright red valve covers that contrast with the dominant black of the engine and swingarm. The mufflers remain housed under the seat, a legacy from the 2000s, but their rounded shape avoids the dated look. The color TFT dashboard, borrowed directly from the RSV4 and Tuono, is a real success. For a motorcycle at €8399, displaying premium sports instrumentation is a significant argument against the competition.

The chassis retains the steel tubular trellis structure with aluminum side plates, an architecture that already had rigor on the 750. The 41 mm inverted fork, adjustable in rebound and preload, is lighter than the old one. The new three-spoke rims do even better: 900 grams saved on the front wheel, 1300 grams on the rear. 2.2 kilograms less on the unsprung masses, that's goldsmith's work that is felt directly on agility into corners. The brakes rely on two 320 mm discs at the front with radial four-piston calipers, and a 240 mm rear disc with a single-piston caliper, all covered by a two-channel ABS. The maximum speed announced at 220 km/h places the machine in the right register without claiming to compete with hypernakeds.

On paper, the Aprilia Shiver 900 specification sheet is solid. In reality, the machine targets an intermediate rider who seeks Italian character, a mechanically distinctive personality, and a motorcycle that can be seriously accessorized thanks to the Aprilia catalog, luggage and screen at the top. It neither has the sound volume of the MT-09 nor the frontal brutality of the Z 900, and it knows it. Its territory is the balance between driving pleasure and real usability, with a transalpine flair that its Japanese rivals will never have. It remains to convince buyers of the used Aprilia Shiver 900 who scrutinize the listings, often tempted by lower prices on competitors. The challenge is commercial as much as technical, and Aprilia has not yet fully won it.
