Overview

When Aprilia decided, in the late 1990s, to leave its usual territory of small displacement engines to attack the king segment of hypersports, no one really knew what to expect. The brand from Noale was renowned for its 125 and 250 competition machines, not for large, intimidating engines. The Aprilia RSV 1000 2000 convincingly answered these doubts, and the subsequent years — Aprilia RSV 1000 2001, Aprilia RSV 1000 2002, Aprilia RSV 1000 2003 — confirmed that it was not a fluke.

Aprilia RSV 1000

The heart of the machine is a 60-degree V-twin of 997.6 cc developing 128 horsepower at 9250 rpm for 101 Nm of torque at 8000 rpm. These figures read well on an Aprilia RSV 1000 technical specification sheet, but what doesn’t read is the texture of this engine. The 60° V is not the most common in the category: it offers an interesting compromise between the nervous character of 90° twins and the compactness of more closed configurations. Injection and the pneumatic clutch assist system during downshifts, a rare technical detail at the time, give the powertrain a refined, almost sophisticated personality. You twist the throttle on straights and the response is frank, linear, without jerks. The engine keeps its promises to the rev limiter.

What truly distinguishes the Aprilia RSV 1000 R from its direct rivals is its accessibility. The Ducati 996, the absolute benchmark of the sporty twin at the time, demanded a considerable physical and mental investment. The RSV, on its double perimeter aluminum frame, with its 43 mm inverted fork and 135 mm stroke mono-shock, proves more communicative. The front end inspires confidence quickly, which allows you to place the motorcycle with commitment without fearing immediate retribution. The 220 kg when fully fueled remains a reality at low speed, but at a sustained pace, this weight is forgotten. The 825 mm seat height is not low, but the riding position remains manageable for a rider of average height.

Aprilia RSV 1000

The RSV can also behave off-circuit, which was not a given for a machine sold for 12,855 euros and clearly positioned in the upper echelons of the sporty segment. The fairing provides adequate protection, the controls do not punish in everyday use, and the 20-liter tank provides reasonable range. Two drawbacks deserve to be pointed out without detour: the rear shock shows its limits on degraded surfaces, where it transmits irregularities too directly; the brakes, two 320 mm front discs with four-piston calipers and a 220 mm rear disc, lack initial bite during heavy braking. Not critical, but notable on a machine of this level.

Aprilia RSV 1000

Whether in the original Aprilia RSV 1000 2000 version or in later evolutions such as the Aprilia RSV 1000 R 2004 or the Aprilia RSV 1000 R 2005, the proposition remains consistent: a hypersport twin less exclusive than the Italian competition, more versatile, and capable of satisfying both the weekend track rider and the sporty touring rider. The Tuono, a derived roadster, has indeed proven that the mechanical base was solid. On the Aprilia RSV 1000 used market, these years remain relevant purchases for those who want to taste the golden age of sporty twins without mortgaging their bank account.
