Arnaud Vincent rode it to the world title. Aprilia doesn’t hide this lineage, it even makes it the heart of its commercial argument for the RS 125 2t. The fairing reprises the visual codes of the RS 250, itself a direct heir to the GP class, and this genealogy is reflected in the technical choices: a 40 mm diameter inverted fork, a banana swingarm, lightweight wheels, and a dry weight contained at 139 kilos. On paper, it’s a race replica dressed for the road.

The 124.6 cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine revs to 11,000 rpm to deliver 29.2 horsepower in unrestricted configuration, which represents a rare power density for this displacement. In the A1 license compliant restricted version, the Aprilia RS 125 engine demands constant work from the six-speed gearbox to remain in the useful range, which is both a constraint and a formidable riding school. The announced top speed of 155 km/h places the machine at the top of its category, shadowing a Cagiva Mito which remains its historic rival in this segment.
The chassis doesn’t betray the promises of the design brief. The perimeter aluminum frame absorbs loads without flexing, the 110/70-17 front and 150/60-17 rear tires offer a contact area consistent with the machine’s sporty ambition. Braking relies on a 320 mm disc bitten by a four-piston caliper at the front, a specification worthy of a mid-range 600. On the track, the precision of the steering and stability under late braking make the difference.

The question of the public remains. The Aprilia RS 125 used bike that still circulates abundantly on the classifieds is testament to relative durability, but the two-stroke engine demands rigorous maintenance, specific Aprilia RS 125 parts, and mechanical knowledge that not all young license holders have. At a new price of 5,189 euros, the price positions the RS above a Derbi GPR or a Honda NSR, and this premium is only justified if the owner envisages track use or intensive training in sporty riding. It is bored by city riding, stifled by springtime rides. It’s a track beast uncomfortable on a leash, and this must be accepted before signing the order form.
