Overview
When we talk about the Aprilia RS 125 today, we cannot ignore the ghost of the two-stroke that still lingers in paddock conversations. Older riders will tell you about the 1998, 1999, 2000 versions; the screaming engines, the 54 world titles proudly displayed on the tank, twenty of which were won in the 125 class with 2t machines that wrote the history of the sport. The 2021 version turns its back on that era, not out of repudiation, but out of regulatory obligation. This 124.2 cc four-stroke single-cylinder engine is therefore the present of the RS, and Aprilia has seriously worked to ensure that this present is respectable.

The Aprilia RS 125 engine has undergone a complete rejuvenation: redesigned cylinder head, redesigned combustion chamber, reworked camshafts, iridium spark plug, new air filter, redesigned exhaust system, and a Magneti Marelli MIUG4 ECU to orchestrate all of this in compliance with Euro 5. The numerical result remains unchanged on paper, 15 horsepower at 10,000 rpm, because the law leaves no other choice in this segment. But the engine's character has changed. The 11.2 Nm of torque arrives earlier in the rev range, the curve is more generous at the bottom, and the 58-tooth sprocket improves acceleration out of corners. For a young A2 license holder looking to progress, this is exactly what is needed, a machine that responds without needing to be woken up with violent wrist action.
The Aprilia RS 125 2021 bodywork borrows its look from the RS 660; integrated turn signals in the headlights, refined surfaces, streamlined lines. This is not an aesthetic revolution, but a consistent update that gives the small sportbike a credible family resemblance to the adult models in the range. The underlying structure does not fundamentally change, and that is good news: the perimeter aluminum frame, the 41 mm inverted fork, and the radial four-piston caliper on the 300 mm disc are carried over without discussion. The tires are upgraded to Michelin Pilot Streets, a concrete improvement in cornering. Bosch ABS makes its appearance, the clip-on handlebars rise by 18 mm to relieve the back on longer journeys. With 144 kg fully fueled and a seat at 820 mm, the machine remains accessible even for those of modest stature.

The fully digital LCD dashboard replaces the old analog-digital combination. Speed, revs, engine temperature, fuel level, time, mileage, battery voltage, it’s all there, with the possibility of switching between a white or blue display depending on your mood. As an option, the Aprilia MIA platform connects the smartphone to further enrich the experience. For a machine displayed at 5,399 euros, this level of equipment holds its own against the KTM RC 125 or the Honda CBR 125R, its direct rivals in this niche.

The Aprilia RS 125 2021 is aimed at a specific audience: the young rider who wants to learn the mechanics of a sportbike, work on their trajectories, and not end up with a machine that is too tame. This is not a vacation bike or an urban tool; it is a road-approved riding school, limited to 120 km/h in the restricted version. Those considering an older Aprilia RS 125 on the second-hand market will find previous generations at a better price, but the 2021 version justifies the difference with its refined engine and modernized electronics. The possibility of adding a quickshifter as an option completes its serious profile for those who really want to learn to ride, not just to roll.
