Overview
Imagine an era when manufacturers still dared to sell race bikes to individuals, with just a turn signal as a loophole for road legality. We are in 2001, and Yamaha launches a missile named YZF 750 R7 OW-02. This is not a machine designed for the showroom; it is a pure competition weapon, a special homologation intended to replace the aging YZF 750 SP. For the modest sum of 27,440 euros at the time, you were literally buying the motorcycle that won the Bol d’Or, ready to face the Superbike championship after a simple removal of the street equipment. Its Deltabox aluminum frame, swingarm from 500 GP bikes, and five-valve per cylinder four-cylinder engine speak a clear language.

Under the 24-liter fuel tank beats a titanium heart. Connecting rods and valves in this lightweight material allow this 749 cc block to rev with a ferocity that chills the blood. The technical specifications announce 160 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, but it must be understood that this power is only released in the upper reaches of the tachometer. Below 7,000 rpm, the engine may seem lazy, almost asleep. But this supposed defect is not one, because the Yamaha YZF 750 R7 OW-02 was never designed for roundabouts. It exists for the track, where its 72.6 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm and its demonic liveliness transform every straight into a rocket and every corner into a surgical precision exercise.
The chassis is in keeping with this. With a dry weight of 175 kilograms and a seat height of 840 mm, this R7 is short, thin, and visually totally aggressive. Road holding is controlled by a set of high-end Öhlins suspensions, an inverted 43 mm fork at the front and a mono-shock at the rear, offering exemplary stability even at the end of sixth gear, where the speedometer displays 278 km/h. The braking system, with its two 320 mm discs at the front, is of a power and feel that inspires absolute confidence. Every component screams competition.
So, who is this machine for? Certainly not for the beginner, nor even for the Sunday rider. The Yamaha YZF 750 R7 OW-02 is the ultimate weapon of the hard-core track rider, or the demanding collector who understands that this motorcycle represents the pinnacle of late 20th-century sportbikes. Compared to it, even production Replica models seem heavy and civilized. Its price was pharaonic, its production limited, and its character absolutely uncompromising. It was the last of a line, a factory Superbike that you could (almost) drive home. Today, it has become a legend, a mechanical grail that recalls an era when the engineers' madness had not yet been tamed by regulations.
