Overview
Who said a production motorcycle couldn't be a true track weapon in disguise? At the turn of the 2000s, Yamaha threw a stone into the pond with this Yamaha YZF 750 R7 OW-02, a war machine so radical that it made the usual Replicas pale in comparison. It wasn't a road-softened version, but the competition beast itself, the very one that triumphed at the Bol d'Or, to which they had just attached turn signals to pass the homologation gates. For the modest sum of 27,440 euros at the time, you were buying the very essence of the racetrack.

Its heart beats to the rhythm of a five-valve inline four-cylinder engine, a 749 cc animal designed for high RPMs. With 160 horsepower released at 11,000 rpm, you have to know how to make it sing. At the bottom of the rev range, it may seem a little sleepy, but it doesn't matter: once the redline is approached, the machine transforms, spitting out its power with demonic vehemence. All of this is housed in an aluminum Deltabox frame, enclosing a dry weight of 175 kg, which makes it as agile as a feline. The Yamaha YZF 750 R7 OW-02 is a sculpture of precious metal, using titanium for the connecting rods and valves, explaining its ability to rev up to a dizzying speed.
The equipment lives up to its claims: a competition Öhlins fork and monoshock, a swingarm from 500 GP bikes, and a stop-on-the-fly braking system. The handling is surgically precise, offering rail-like stability at speeds where most sportbikes begin to float. It is a machine that tolerates no approximations, designed for those who aim for the stopwatch before comfort. With its 24-liter tank and a 840 mm seat height, it is anything but a tourer.
Facing competitors like the Honda RC45 or the Ducati 996 SPS, more focused on a road/track compromise, the Yamaha YZF 750 R7 OW-02 fully embraces its role as a racing tool. Its price and extreme character reserved it for a handful of experienced and wealthy riders, capable of exploiting its potential on the track, especially with the racing kits that released even more power. Today, it has become an icon, the pinnacle of pure race sport at the end of the 20th century, far too wild for the average person but absolutely mythical for the demanding collector.
