Overview
The latest modifications to the 250cc model are still recent (2025) – Yamaha had made a few minor adjustments to the YZ 250 F. The exhaust system was redesigned to reduce noise levels, in accordance with FIM noise regulations. In addition, power characteristics have been refined to produce a smooth and controllable response at low RPM, and linear performance at mid-range.
The handlebar controls and throttle body have been redesigned to improve rider comfort and minimize the risk of pressing the wrong button when wearing gloves.
The YZ 250 F underwent a major overhaul in 2024. It features a frame inspired by the YZ 450 F, an ultra-compact bodywork, increased mid-range power, and settings via the Power Tuner app. Retaining the highly appreciated strengths of the previous model, the YZ 250 F is lighter, faster, and easier to ride.
Aluminum frame inspired by the YZ 450 F
The YZ 250 F is equipped with an aluminum frame that has proven its worth on the 450. This frame provides ease and lightness in maneuverability and improved feedback, allowing the rider to push their limits and maximize the powerful torque of the bike at low and mid-range RPM.
The main improvement to the frame is the repositioning of the steering column, lowered by 15 mm. This significant change helps to better centralize the mass, which improves handling and allows for quicker direction changes.
The steering column is also thinner and lighter, contributing to the weight reduction of the 250. To accommodate the 2024/2025 model’s steering column, the fuel tank rails are also mounted much lower and feature a U-shaped profile at the rear, which modifies the frame rigidity to achieve an ideal degree of controlled flex.
Thanks to its design, which allows for a lower center of gravity and improved shock absorption, this chassis reinforces the feeling of being one with the machine and allows you to take corners faster and with more agility.
Refined bodywork with flatter seat
The bodywork gives the YZ-F a slimmer, lighter, and more streamlined silhouette, which contributes to making the bike obvious to ride, more homogeneous, and faster. The 2024/2026 model features bodywork that, like the frame, is inspired by the YZ 450 F. 50 mm narrower, it provides great ease of movement for the rider, who can position the weight of their body forward. A seamless, 6 mm narrower seat, and much flatter, with a height difference between the front and rear reduced by 15 mm on the '24 '25 model further facilitates rider movements. The compact front fender, with a new design, promotes airflow to the radiators for better cooling. The short and flat rear fender and slim side panels reinforce the more compact and lighter appearance of this next-generation 250cc four-stroke engine.
Rider position triangle
Subtle but nevertheless notable improvements have been made to the ergonomics of the YZ 250 F thanks to precise modifications to the geometry of the rider position triangle. Thanks to a flatter and higher 5 mm seat and footrests positioned 5 mm lower, the legs benefit from an additional 10 mm of space. The handlebars have been brought closer to the rider, which, with the position of the seat and footrests, improves ergonomics and handling.
Optimized KYB suspension settings
KYB suspensions are considered among the best in their class, and since 2024, the internal components of the fork and rear shock have been improved to optimize the performance of the new frame. Damping settings front and rear have been revised to improve shock absorption and traction, and a manual compression damping adjustment at the fork allows for faster and more obvious suspension adjustments. For better protection against scratches and splashes, the fork protectors wrap more of the inner sides of the tubes, and for greater durability, the KYB fork is equipped with long-lip seals that prevent impurities from entering.
Improved rear braking
The rear brake plays a key role in direction changes, corner entry, and adjusting the angle of the machine in motion, and the feel transmitted to the rider is essential in this control. That’s why the YZ 250 F uses a rear hose with reduced stiffness that improves braking balance and provides the rider with more precise control.
Increased performance thanks to efficient airflow management and injection tuning
An efficient airflow management system is used on the YZ250F, air now entering the airbox through a rear duct system like the one used on the victorious YZ450F in MXGP and AMA supercross. The compact bodywork incorporates ducts in the side panels, frame, and tank that channel fresh air to a high-capacity, rounded-profile air filter, with increased cleaning capacity of 30%. In addition, the lower box is now made of rubber and not plastic to promote air pulsation at intake. The rear duct airflow definition contributes to improving performance at mid and high speeds as well as the over-rev characteristics of the 250cc reverse-head engine.
The ECU features an updated fuel and ignition mapping, designed to optimize the performance gains achieved thanks to the various modifications made to the engine. Riders familiar with the previous model will notice an improvement in performance at mid and high RPM, which, combined with the bike’s legendary low and mid-range torque, makes the YZ 250 F an even more competitive machine.
Low-friction cam chain
The 250cc engine is known for its high low and mid-range torque and its great controllability in different conditions. These qualities have made it one of the best 250cc four-stroke engines. Yamaha engineers have strived to retain all the positive attributes of this engine, while redoubling their efforts to improve its high-RPM performance. To adapt, the YZ 250 F benefits from a wider and more durable low-friction cam chain. The double overhead cam engine is also fitted with chain sprockets and tensioner adjustments that optimize efficiency.
Adjustable traction control system
The 2024 250cc model features a two-level assistance traction control system, as well as an OFF function. Controlled by the latest Power Tuner app, this system provides the rider with greater control on wet or unstable surfaces. With less wheelspin, the rider can focus fully on the terrain.
Launch control system
The YZ250F benefits from a launch control system with a “rev limiter” function settable between 6,000 and 11,000 RPM in increments of 500 RPM. This launch control allows the rider to launch at full throttle and focus fully on getting the holeshot. When the launch control system detects that the start has taken place, the rev limiter function is automatically switched off, and once the 3rd gear is engaged, the launch control system deactivates.
Simplified Power Tuner app
The Yamaha Power Tuner app is one of the most significant evolutions of recent years. The brand was one of the first to offer wireless engine tuning, and the latest generation system has been designed to be even easier to use.
The YZ 250 F Power Tuner app offers a “quick tune” option with a scroll bar to alternate between an explosive and a smoother mapping. This system, designed to allow ultra-fast tuning at the trackside, is the easiest and most intuitive ever used on this model.
The Power Tuner app retains the 4x4 matrix that allows for detailed modifications to the mapping for professional teams who want to achieve optimal performance. A multifunction switch allows you to switch between two downloaded mappings during the same session.
The Power Tuner app can also be used to define the settings for the YZ250F’s traction and launch controls. The system records data lap by lap, allowing you to evaluate the effectiveness of different mapping settings. The app also includes a section dedicated to suspensions, with tips and suggested settings adapted to different situations.
