Overview
We often talk about the Ténéré when discussing Yamaha and off-road riding, but in the shadows, the Iwata engineers haven't rested on their laurels regarding the true spearhead of competition: the YZ. For 2024, it’s the small queen of motocross, the YZ250F, that’s put on the table and receives an update as massive as it is strategic. The objective is clear: maintain the lead that makes it a regular on the podium in MXGP and Supercross. The result? A machine that has little in common with its predecessor, designed to be lighter, faster, and infinitely easier to tame.

The core of the change lies in its chassis. Yamaha took a gamble: grafting the aluminum frame from its big sister, the formidable YZ450F, onto this 250. This isn't just a marketing ploy. By lowering the steering column by 15 mm, engineers have radically recentered the masses. On the track, the difference is felt immediately: the bike leans with disconcerting liveliness and seems to turn on its own. This feeling of precision is reinforced by a redesigned bodywork, 5 cm narrower, and a flat-profile seat that frees the rider. At just 105 kg fully fueled, this 2024 Yamaha YZ250F feels like riding a kart, offering agility that could make some Austrian competitors pale.
But a motocross bike lives not only on its frame. The 250 cm³ four-stroke single-cylinder engine, already renowned for its charming low-end torque, has also been tweaked. The focus has been on higher revs, with a new low-friction timing chain and optimized air management, directly inspired by the victorious YZ450F. The goal? To avoid that feeling of "tiredness" at the end of the straightaway. Coupled with a new ignition system, the engine gains breath while retaining its characteristic ease of use. This is where the new electronic system comes into play. The Power Tuner application, simplified for 2024, allows you to adjust the mapping, two-level traction control, and even a rev limiter for starts, with a simple swipe of your finger on your smartphone. A man-machine connection that was unthinkable on a 2009 Yamaha YZ250F and provides a considerable tactical advantage.
So, who is this race machine for? Clearly for the serious motocross rider, from the good amateur to the national competitor, who is looking for an immediate and evolving weapon. At nearly €9800, the price of the 2024 Yamaha YZ250F places it in the big leagues, competing head-on with the KTM 250 SX-F or the Honda CRF250R. Its strength? Versatility and handling that forgive more than a KTM, known to be more edgy. Its weakness? Perhaps this rear brake, which, despite an improved braided line, still lacks bite compared to its European rivals' piston-sliding calipers.
Ultimately, Yamaha hasn't revolutionized the category, but has done a master craftsman's work. This new YZ250F is an almost perfect synthesis between the agility of a 250 and the stability of a 450. It won’t be the most powerful on the dyno (we’re talking about around 44 horsepower), but on a bumpy circuit, where you need to string together direction changes and delicate lean angles, it could well be the fastest. It's a machine that wins races in the corners, not in the specifications on paper. For enthusiasts looking for Yamaha YZ250F 2024 accessories or custom graphics, they will enjoy fine-tuning a motorcycle that is already well-finished from the factory. Further proof that at Yamaha, the culture of motocross victory is a matter of details and pure sensations.
