Overview

This marks the end of the road for the Yamaha YS 125. And what a journey! Discreet yet always ready, this basic 125 has prolonged the YBR’s mission until today. A presence since 2005, that’s quite something. But from its predecessor, it has retained only its vocation. To wander with candor and discretion, that was the thing of before.

That is no longer enough for the little Yamaha, which decided to evolve without changing its philosophy. Another name, modernized design, a different kind of presence; and beneath the skin, still a vocation that is both economical and urban. The mission of the YS 125 is to slip into everyday life, now with a more sparkling face.

On the Yamaha YS 125, the silhouette clearly changes generation, from end to end of the machine. With a more feline face, prominent fairings, a more tapered prow, a blackened engine and exhaust line, this bike displays a welcome boost in dynamism. Without, however, falling into provocation. The MT is for that.

A fresher, finer face does not fully satisfy Yam. The engine has been revised, and extensively. With a bore reduced from 54 mm to 52.4 mm and a stroke increased from 54 mm to 57.9 mm, this block is no longer square but long-stroke, in order to favor torque. With its modest displacement, it cannot claim violence but the torque is indeed improved, gaining 0.1 mkg. The YS is propelled by 10.6 hp and 1.1 mkg. Internal dimensions revised and not only that. The block houses a new cylinder head with a narrower valve angle and reinforced valves. Compliant with Euro4 standard, it can look forward to long hours of use in urban environments, especially since the tank has gained a liter in capacity, making it 14 in total. The announced range is 300 km. A double solution almost impossible to find today, the start-up can be carried out electrically or with the kick.

Since the YBR, the motorcycle has gained a little weight. Three kilos. With 129 units on the scale, we remain in the reasonable. Quite enough to weave through the city without afterthought. Indeed, in the city, the YS judged that a slightly more dominant riding position would be beneficial. It has therefore raised the saddle to 795 mm (+15) to favor a more natural and more comfortable seat.

No surprises regarding the cycle part which remains very simple, with a steel tubular frame, a slender fork assisted by a duo of shock absorbers, a 245 mm disc at the front bitten by a piston and a 130 mm drum at the rear. The braking uses the Yamaha UBS integral system. Simple solutions that allow to keep a dried-up price at a maximum. The dashboard intends to escape this and wants a zest of modernity. Finished the double needle dial; place for a more modern instrumentation with an analog tachometer supported by a digital window.

With the YS 125, Yamaha renews the simplest urban solution with a touch of elegance. We keep the fundamentals and we play on the ills... of the city. Some would do well to be inspired.
